V10 owners.. How much better is the V20?

They obviously revamped it. Just takes a touch to wake the phone (no press). Do you have one? If not, it's easy to see how you'd have a difficult time understanding.

If the only difference is that a touch wakes the phone instead of a press, that's not any sort of huge improvement.

Just because it's different, doesn't make it "way" better or whatever.

If the phone is awake but on the lock screen, the V10 FPS is superb--couldn't be any better. To listen to the hyperbole here, one would think LG somehow magically made it 100 times better--which, frankly, isn't possible. Hence the confusion.

Better enough to drop $865? Just to get "I don't have to press the button to wake it up!"?? Hardly.

From screen off you no longer have to push the power button on the V20 like you did on the V10. Just set your finger on the FPS and it logs in and turns screen on.

Also it's faster and more accurate.

I have a V10. It is not possible for the V20 FPS to be faster and more accurate than the V10 running MM, as the V10 is instant response and 100% accurate, every time.

In the beginning, the v10 fingerprint scanner would not work if you had certain cases on it.

Under Lollipop, yes. With MM the FPS functionality changed from being an LG add-on to being a core Android OS function, and it's instant and 100% accurate.

I had a V10 for 8 months and although I loved the phone, the FPS was not 100% accurate every single time for me and it wasn't for other people as well. A deal breaker? Hardly. Well it almost was early on since I had issues with the case being on but after the update that went away.

I also have the V20. For me, it's been faster and more accurate. And the fact that I don't have to wake the screen to use the FPS or hold the power button down to use the FPS makes the improvements to the FPS that much better.

FPS is definitely faster than the V10. The V20 is night and day compared to the V10. You won't know until you try it. What people don't realize is how much more effecient Nougat is with the latest hardware.

Yes sir. You have to setup pin, pattern, or password in case FPS doesn't work.

Absolutely. When you go to set up FPS, the first thing it will do is make sure you have a PIN or similar already set up. If not, it will have you do that before you set up your fingerprint.

again, how can one improve on instant and 100% accurate?

I'm referring to the V10 on Marshmallow.

The FPS on the V10 is.
Like others have already mentioned. Not having to wake the screen or press the button makes the V20 FPS much more convenient and faster to use. You place your finger on it and boom.

Head out to a store and try it for yourself if you're that skeptical.

Nothing is 100% accurate and it isn't instant. If it was instant there would be an imperceptible time lapse between finger touching the scanner and screen coming on. That simply isn't the case.

There are several things (and I'm sure many more that I'm not familiar with) that could be improved to make the FPS faster. The physical sensor, the algorithm, the IC that carries the data, and the processor could all be improved to make the entire scanning process faster for the user. We know for a fact that the processor is better so there's one variable that could speed things up. I have no idea about the others but I doubt technology advancement is stagnant for them either.

Just the fact that the screen doesn't have to be on or the power button pressed in order for the user to login with the FPS makes it more efficient for the user. That makes it better even if it wasn't actually faster. But it is faster.

Agree! I loved the v10 but returned it after 2 days, battery was horrible

V20: best battery life I have ever had on any phone

Decided to put my early impressions here since I used to have the V10. I haven't used the V10 since March but I had about 5 months time with it before I traded it in for the S7 Edge. First thing I did was get it setup and download all my apps because battery drain is going to be pretty crazy during the initial setup and the device did get quite warm. After fully charging it to 100% I've spent roughly 6 hours with it. Here's what I've noticed so far...

1) Screen - Brighter than the V10 and more vibrant...of course not as vibrant as my S7 Edge but that's to be expected. At least its not curved tho!!! =) I'm running mine at 90% at the moment...mostly to try and get as close the brightness I've been used to on the S7 Edge. I'll probably tone it down once I get used to it...I know that will be a big drain on battery life.

2) Battery - Much better than the V10 so far but I'll need to test this more. I'll post my results in the battery thread. But its not draining anywhere near as fast as the V10 would.

3) Speaker - Huge difference over the V10! Much louder and sounds better too! Very impressed!

4) Fingerprint Scanner(FPS) - Had 0 issues setting it up and its the most responsive FPS I've ever used. All I have to do is tap my finger on it and the screen is unlocked. 1000 times better than the V10 and even a huge improvement over my S7 Edge as well.

5) Second screen - Big improvement! Larger font and much brighter when the main display is off. I loved having the 2nd screen on the V10 but didn't like that it was so dim when the main display was turned off....made it difficult to see notifications. Those problems are gone.

6) Build quality
- Ok at first when I saw the design and realized they weren't bringing back the rugged back and steel side rails I was disappointed. I thought that was one thing that made the V series stand out from all other phones. But the V20 is solid! It's well built and feels premium. I love the slim bezels on this thing. I wish the phone was a little thicker...surprised at how thin it is....but I'm using a case so that makes up for it.

So far, I only have a couple of minor complaints and they mostly have to do with software. Theming options sucks and are limited. I selected the high contrast one and it looks fine. I remember watching some videos where I saw people change the color of the font and such so I need to play around with it more. I thought after a year LG would have improved upon their theme store(LG World) but its still a joke and has maybe 6 themes to choose from.

My other complaint is with the "Knock to unlock" feature. When I had my V10 I liked having the option to unlock it by using a knock code when it was laying flat on my desk and didn't have to pick it up to use the FPS. Well, they brought it back in the V20 but now you have to enter 6 knock code instead of 4!! This is annoying!!! Four knock pattern was easy to remember but six is just too many imo especially when you factor in mistakes.

Anyways, I love the phone so far. Great job LG!
