V20 Speaker Distortion Issue

I recently bought a used Sprint V20, it's in mint condition except for a speaker issue.

A few days after I got it, the speaker started crackling a little at high volumes. I kept the volume about mid level and it worked fine, for a while. About a week later I was watching a video, and it suddenly got VERY distorted, as in you can't make out anything anyone says, music no longer sounds like music, it's all just noise. It also now sometimes makes a quiet static noise when there should be no sound at all.

I have tried factory resetting (twice), no effect. Replaced the speaker, no effect.

Headphone jack works fine, bluetooth works fine, only has issues through the main speaker. Has the issue 100% of the time.

Any ideas?

Maybe it got wet by accident or unknowingly. Leave it in the rice bin for 5 hours or more.

It's a bad speaker. Happened to me with my Verizon v20. Had it 6 months and bam, speaker shot. Don't waste your time sending it to LG. I sent mine in twice to get fixed and both times LG sent it back to me with the speaker still blown out. Finally just called Verizon and they sent me a replacement v20. LG service is a joke.

You can easily replace your own speakers on it.

Just Google search LG v20 speaker replacement there are several videos on doing this.. .. You can also find the factory oem replacement parts on eBay for a few dollars.

I've used LG for 2 much bigger issues and the repairs were satisfactory.

I have also with the G4's bootloop repair and that was okay, but this last issue with the blown external speaker was a complete failure. Was in communication with the repair team and they never repaired or replaced the bad speaker. Sent the phone into LG twice and they couldn't figure it out. Both times the said the phone speaker was fixed. Joke.

If you read the OP it clearly states "Replaced the speaker, no effect."

I'm not familiar enough with the hardware design to know if the same audio driver circuit outputs to both the speaker and the headphone jack - if so then I can't account for the speaker-only symptom.

It doesn't on the V20 when the DAC is on.

It's either the amp that drives the external speaker that's bad or the actual external speaker that's blown out. It won't get better, you're either going to have to live with it or try to get a replacement from your carrier. If you bought it second hand you may be out of luck.

Never had an issue with my V20. I bought mines brand new. Buying a used phone is like buying a used car, you just gotta trust that it works fine and never got damaged. In your case it could be either it was already damaged from previous owner, or a software/hardware defect (maybe the DAC didn't turn off and it blew the speaker, it should be off by default when using loud speaker). Also, what kind of music/sounds did you play? I know certain sounds may damage speakers, especially distorted high frequency sounds (heavy metal screamo music, bad quality videos, etc.).

OP also stated that the phone was used. Who knows what it went through, maybe it was damaged and repaired then resold.

BTW the DAC turns off when it's on loudspeaker, you can't enable it.

You know I saw that but then forgot it about it. Probably was sold knowing there was a problem.

Old post, but let me explain what happened. I took my phone to the LG Service Center. They found out the problem was not with the speaker (they changed it and the problem was still there), but with the motherboard. So they replaced the motherboard. Fortunately the phone was still under warranty.
