Value of Rooting

I recently bought the Droid, my first Android phone and was wondering the main values of rooting...

Is it like jailbreaking an iPhone, enabling to you to get free apps from the App Store?
Does it contain customization?

no

you don't root to get free apps

you root to be able to run custom Rom's and do all kinds of things you're phone's capable of but Verizon/Google would rather you not do

uh, just go browse alldroid.org and look around for a while, you can see plenty of stuff you can do with rooted phones

Be careful if you plan on Modding files or running otherpeoples Apps.. the recovery Roms and custom Roms are still alpha/beta.. eitherway good luck.y
