Verizon Galaxy S5 data usage through the roof

I don't know whether you have figured this out or not But here goes..

WHEN THE S5 IS ON WIFI AND THE SCREEN GOES OUT----IT REVERTS BACK TO DATA !!! YEP, THAT'S WHERE YOUR DATA USE COMES FROM...

Do you have any proof that this is true? I'm pretty sure mine stays on and connected even when the screen is off.

can't you guys just click off "mobile data"? i have mine off and no wi-fi if not home and phone doesn't do a dam thing except make phone calls and texts. get home, wi-fi kicks in or if i need to use internet i turn on mobile data real quick, do what i need to do then turn it off again. i barely use any data.

I just switched from an iPhone 4 to a Samsung Galaxy S5 and there have been many disappointments, but the latest of which is that I've already exceeded my mandated 3GB monthly data plan in less than 2 weeks! I couldn't get a 2GB a month data plan with a 4G phone as I had before and the salesman said the phone was going to use more data but this is ridiculous. I've never even come close to exceeding my prior 2GB a month data plan with an iPhone 4. Now that I've shut down all apps and am using wifi I still see that the phone manages to suck down about 17 megabytes every 2 hours just by being ON. I guess I should shut my phone OFF until I need to make a phone call now. Is this part of the corporate plan to make sure everyone pays the $10 penalty for the extra 1GB a month?

This is not correct. My phone is on 100% of the time and I use no mobile data what so ever when connected to wifi independent of the screen shutting down or not. In fact at night when I'm sleeping the screen shuts off ..... no mobile data used at all.

Whoa. For me, Milk Music is #1, even though I only tried it once for a couple of hours. My #2 is Google Play, because I'm too impatient to wait until I'm on Wi-Fi to add my apps to this new phone. That should be a lot lower next month.

Funny, I assumed Milk would use less data than Pandora because there are no ads (and some of the ads were video/graphics), but I guess that's not the case.

I am having the same problem, but its my tethering that is using all my data. I have to use my phone as a mobile hotspot (live out in the country, no cable available) I hardly used 2GB a month on my droid M and I used that phone the same way. I have used almost 10 GB this first month with this phone!! :'(

I noticed the same thing when I first got my S5, and it drove me nuts trying to find the problem. Not only was it using excessive data, but the 4G icon was ALWAYS lit (it should be grayed out when WiFi is on). Finally, I found that Verizon's Caller Name ID was the culprit (even though I don't subscribe to it). As soon as I turned it off on the app info page, the 4G icon grayed out.

However, the reason I even found this thread today is because I just got pushed the 4.4.4 update, and now the 4G is lit up again with WiFi. I was hoping to find any info on what it could be this time.
The only thing that's different since the update is that Basic Visual Voicemail is now included with the plan. But the apps only list "Voice Mail", and that can't be turned off (button is grayed out).
Anyone know what else it could be? I even checked the "Restrict background data" setting but the 4G is still at the ready, with the occasional activity showing on the arrows below it.

I'm having the same issue. I bought my Galaxy S5 around the 20th of September. My normal data usage is under 1 gb, and suddenly I'm at nearly 2 after having the phone for 14 days. I've disabled everything I can think of, and the 4G light is still on while I'm at home with a stable wifi connection.

I will be calling Verizon in the morning to see if they can help me. If not, this phone is going back. I can't afford the extra charges for another GB.

I have found that since the 4.4.4 update, the 4G light never goes off, but I seem to have kept my data to normal levels by disabling every single Verizon app, including the new free basic visual voice mail. I went online and removed that and went back to regular basic voice mail.
Since then I haven't noticed any unusual spikes in mobile data use.

Yep, you pretty much nailed it.

Same here but no increase in data usage.

I hardly use any data and all of a sudden I've used over 2GB of data since getting the S5 a couple of weeks ago.
With the S4 and iPhone 5 I never even got close to 1GB. Anyone have any idea what is going on here?
Thanks.

I have had the same problem for the last two months so I asked my provider. And they told me to go to settings...data usage and un-check where it had been checked off to allow Mobile data. They told me that because that was checked off my phone was automatically using my data plan instead of my wireless. I have now unchecked it and this will be the first time I use it this cycle this way. Hoping that it works. They were pretty adamant that. It would. Seems it's a common issue people. With the S5 are having. I guess if we want to use mobile data when out of wireless range we should turn it back on and just remember to turn it off again when back on a wireless network

We had this problem on one phone. Went to Verizon and was told that everyone that has the Facebook App on their phone will see increased data usage due to a change by Facebook. If you notice, now ALL videos play automatically on your Facebook page. You have to go into the Facebook video settings and disable Auto-Play. You will know that it's disabled when the videos go back to having a "Play" button on them. This is all it took to fix the problem. The reason it only happened on one phone is that she had Facebook installed and I didn't! If I want to access Facebook, I'll go through Chrome, and still disable the automatic videos.

I've been experiencing the same thing. Came over from T-mobile, where my usage with the S4 was about .3 to .5 gigs, then went to over 1 gig with the S5 (but that was before I turned off most of background data on apps). Went to Verizon over voice sound quality issues TMobile couldn't resolve. Now voice quality is fine, but in the 20 days I've been with Verizon they say I've used 2.3 gigs of mobile data. Went into store today and dufus played with phone but had no answers whatsoever. Glad to see I'm not the only one and tempted to reach out to appropriate governmental agency over Verizon fraudulent Total bull[inappropriate language edited by Moderator] to pretend they don't know what's going on.

There was an upgrade at one point that when it was done, I found that I now had visual voice mail at no extra charge. I declined it and went back to the standard voice mail because the visual voice mail is the biggest data hog in the VZW arsenal of apps; even if you don't receive voice mails.
I would check and make sure you disable any and all Verizon apps that the phone will allow.
