I know this is new - like as of tonight, but what is the difference between the Camera On and the One Way Camera options on HD calling

Re: Video Calling. Camera On vs One-Way Camera

'One-way camera' means that the person on the other line gets the video feed of you. 'Camera On' is video on both ends. For both options, I think I read that the other person has to choose to accept it.

Note that using this feature counts as data - VZW estimates 6-8mb per min.

I believe that you can roam video calls to wifi, though, which wouldn't count as data.

^^ Good clarification, I forgot about wifi (as opposed to misunderstanding things, this time). Quite right, I've read that as well. You are always the font of knowledge, doogald! Actually, my newbie self should probably stop doing info posts and leave them to competent folks like you eh! ;)

It's the other way around for one way calling isn't it?

Try One-Way Video Calling

Not quite camera-ready? Try one-way video calling to see the person you are talking to without sharing a video of yourself.

Are you sure about that? My understanding is that the video goes over 4G and you are charged for data. There's no switch that allows for Wifi use. I hope to be wrong but I don't think I am.

Re: Video Calling. Camera On vs One-Way Camera

Ok, a bunch to reply to...

cyberr8der, guess I done goofed again, I'll edit above. (EDIT: nix this, the original notion may be correct after all; see post #11 below) Somehow I missed that on the main Advanced Calling page that I skimmed as I spent almost all of my time reading the entire FAQ. What led me astray was this line from the FAQ:

"You can also convert an HD Voice call to a 1-way video call by either turning on your front-facing or rear-facing camera. If the person you called does the same on their side, the 1-way video call is turned to a 2-way video call."

To me it sounds like they'd be getting video from you in a 1-way. Also makes more sense to me that it'd go that way. Interesting that they don't say anything else about 1-way calling in the FAQ. But I'm not going to argue with the big damn print on the main page that I somehow missed! I wish I could've tested it today myself.

cyberr8der, I can confirm that I actually read the exact words about wifi video calling. From the FAQ:

"How do I make a video call over Wi-Fi?
You need to be on the 4G LTE network to start a video call. But as long as your phone is connected to a known Wi-Fi access point (e.g., your home Wi-Fi network), an active video call session will be automatically handed off to Wi-Fi. If Wi-Fi connectivity is lost in the middle of a video call, the video call will seamlessly transition back to the 4G LTE network."

Then the next point says that a wifi icon will appear on the video call screen to indicate transition to wifi. Technically, you do start off on 4g, though with this explanation, I can't imagine that they'd be charging you data if it's completely handed off to wifi.

About praising doogald: I don't think it'll be interpreted wrongly, but just in case, I was being sincere. Seems like he knows a lot about everything and yes, he seems straightforward in presenting the info without 'extracurriculars'. I was serious about considering taking a step back from putting info out there and leaving it up to the seasoned vets. Especially after my showing about the 1-way calling, ack.

Good info there happyfunball. Thanks for that. I didn't read all the FAQ so I appreciate that you took the time to. Still new to us all so we're all on a it of a learning curve here.

Re: Video Calling. Camera On vs One-Way Camera

^^ Doh! I forgot to thank you as well! Funny how I did the opposite, and frankly much more embarrassing thing: I didn't read the entire main page, which is much more readily accessible, publicized, and a quicker read, yet I was anal about reading the whole FAQ, ha. A-s-s backwards, eh. But I appreciate the understanding and support, as I was about to go hide.

Re: Video Calling. Camera On vs One-Way Camera

A new video with 2 Droid Turbos side-by-side seems to show that the phone activating the 1-way video calling is sending the video feed to the other phone, between 4:59 to 5:50:

www.youtube.com/watch?v=malGbI8HenE&list=UUx-LPKrNT5zOUOJpcWXR4FQ#t=299

How 1-way video calling appears to work, based on the video:

- When you press on the "One-way camera" icon (PHONE A), it turns on your rear camera while also sending a request for 1-way calling to the other phone (PHONE B)
- After B presses "Change to One-way Video", B's screen will change to the view of A's rear camera (A's screen can also be switched to the front-facing camera view)

I should note that he goes over that part quickly and I had to rewatch it a couple of times. The video seems legit though, so unless I'm interpreting it wrong or just out of it, it looks like opposite of what is on VZW's main Advanced Calling page:

"Not quite camera-ready? Try one-way video calling to see the person you are talking to without sharing a video of yourself."

I called VZW for clarification and the rep said that 1-way video calling works with your video going to the other phone (as seen above). But after I told him about the Advanced Calling webpage discrepancy, he read it outloud and promptly changed his tune and said the opposite, in line with the webpage.

Can somebody test this out and clear it up for us? I don't have anyone with a compatible phone who can do it right now. Btw, amazingly I wasn't able to Google anyone anywhere that's written about the specifics of this 1-way video calling. I'd like to know what the deal is.

Re: Video Calling. Camera On vs One-Way Camera

I just tried it and the phone that selected one way is the one that sent the video. Seems like the description on their Web page could be better.

Re: Video Calling. Camera On vs One-Way Camera

^^ Thanks, good to know. That video was pretty definitive but it was perplexing that they'd say otherwise on their webpage, have it contradicted in the FAQ, and leave it up there for 3+ months after they announced it and started rolling out Advanced Calling.

Re: Video Calling. Camera On vs One-Way Camera

So, the VZW rep who told me that people initiating the 1-way camera get the video from the other phone (i.e., shows the other people without revealing themselves) sent me a msg. He stated that he tested with tech support and confirmed what he told me yesterday, saying "It worked the way it is designed to work" and thus what's on that website is correct. The saga continues. Unbelievable...

Normally with that strong of a statement, you would think that we should believe VZW and that's that - if not for what's in the FAQ, Youtube vid above, and then cyberr8der confirming. I believe them over VZW, how is it not definitive? Can't wait to try it out myself.

Re: Video Calling. Camera On vs One-Way Camera

Perhaps as some sort of closure to this debacle with VZW detailed above, a different VZW rep called me back to say that they tested the 1-way video calling feature and confirmed (finally) what we've known on here already: whoever hits the 1-way video button sends video to the other phone. So I suggested that they clarify the wording on their Advanced Calling main page:

"Try One-Way Video Calling
Not quite camera-ready? Try one-way video calling to see the person you are talking to without sharing a video of yourself."

I didn't exactly get an enthusiastic response to my suggestion, ha. I guess technically we can't say that the above statement is 100% wrong, but it does imply that the function works in the opposite way (i.e., the wrong way, where you as the initiator of the 1-way would get to see the other phone's video only).

Of course, this wording had led to much of the confusion and discussion in this thread. And it was compounded by the previous rep I talked (from the above posts) who actually said that tech support themselves told him specifically that it worked in such a fashion (i.e., the wrong way). I've just been dumbfounded that VZW tech support (who I figured would be the font of knowledge) could be so off-base about this, one of the few new features being touted in their highly publicized 'Advanced Calling' functionality.

^^ Once one person hits the 1-way button, the other phone's screen changes so that they can accept the 1-way, but not also start another 1-way on their end. Once that person accepts, there's no button to start another 1-way, but you can either end it or change it to 2-way (i.e., typical video calling). You can see this in the video linked above.

Now, if your question is: What would happen if both hit the 1-way button simultaneously? Welp, that might be one of those tearing-a-hole-in-the-space-time-continuum things-where-life-would-cease-to-exist-as-we-know-it... so specifically to avoid that situation, they probably won't let you do that with the buttons.

And now we know, thanks.

Glad I learned what the camera option is and this might be an obvious answer but my boyfriend just screen shoted his call screen (Verizon galaxy 5) to me today asking what the camera option was but I didn't have it on my sprint galaxy 4 is there an option to video chat from Verizon to sprint or is that strictly a Verizon option? Without using Skype/tango/ect.

At least for now it's Verizon to Verizon only. They're talking about extending to att later this year, but that may not be video calling - it may be audio calling only.
