Verizon Rep missed the SIM tray hole and jamed the removal tool into the hole next to it

You need to contact Verizon corporate right now to get the incident on record right now. If not a corporate store then you need to contact the home office for the store owner.

If it is a Verizon store they should start their own internal investigation.

I had a serious incident with a Verizon corporate store a few years ago. It took immediate contact with Verizon corporate and eventual threatened police contact and legal action by me to get it resolved but they did eventually get it right.

Call a uBreakiFix store and ask them if there's anything in that hole that can be damaged from inserting the sim tool in it. I honestly think you'll be fine and I don't think it'll compromise the water resistance. It's most likely sealed like the headphone jack.

Not to go too far off topic but does your unlocked version on Verizon support Wi-Fi calling and HD calling? I thought I read somewhere else that someone was able to get the Wi-Fi calling to work just looking to get a confirmation from someone else. I already have a Verizon S10+ but I'm just curious and might help others. I guess the OP would also know the answer, but didn't think to ask.

Yes, they both work fine.

Another example of how poorly the carriers train these folks
Who says that they train them?

"You know about cellphones, right?"
"Of course."
"Good, you're hired."

I used to take about 2 weeks training my techs before I'd let them touch a real customer's phone. (I started with one tech who could probably have built a phone from baling wire and bubble gum, so it was just the two of us until we got some others trained. They could sell phones, they could sell plans, but until they had been trained, I wouldn't even allow them to put a SIM in a phone. And that was back when phones had opening backs and full size SIMs.)

As I think back, Verizon corporate stores had better reps when Android was still young. They even had a separate tech window where they would do minor trouble shooting. Now it's all about sales. The last time I bought a phone in store from them was when my wife wanted an iPhone 6. The sales guy put a screen protector on without asking and walked away for a second to handle a device I was also returning that I ordered online. We made him take it off because it had bubbles and he never even asked us to buy it. I never buy my phones in store for that and they always ruff handle them during set up.

Verizon not the only one , I think it was my s9+ got it pre-order , went to TMobile store to have a screen protector put on and the guy in front of me set my phone on the table instead of a rag and slid it off before picking it up, guess what happened the back had scratches on it . I told him right there I wanted a replacement phone , it was late he said come tommorow I'll swapp it out for another one and that was that.

The main issue is that the water resistant membrane may have been damaged even if the mic is fine. I think you know, but you should have never let someone else mess with your phone.

Has this thread got anyone else thinking of Scott Baio?

Chachi ? Lol why ?

Unlocked S10+, purchased directly from Samsung, and I'm getting a new SIM at the Verizon store.

I'll just list it out.

  1. Pointy tool given out with S10+ is used to release the SIM/SD-card tray on top of phone.
  2. You're supposed to poke it into the hole on the top edge next to the tray, and the tray releases. Works.
  3. Maybe an inch away to that is another hole that the rep called a "sound port". It's not the ear speaker: That's on the face.
  4. He jammed the release tool into that hole first, and quickly realized his mistake and then got the right hole.
Me: "You didn't actually do any damage to that, did you?"
Rep: "Nope."
Me: "What is that hole for?"
Rep: "It's a sound port. There is nothing sensitive in there any longer, no mesh, no anything, so there was nothing to 'hit'. "
Me: "......." (nervous)

Phone seems ok, but I honestly don't know what's under that hole.

Anyone know what might go wrong in the future? This phone is freaking brand new.

just a thought from me...but how can a rep be that dumb?he didnt even look for the rectangular cutout of the sim tray before poking?

I'm not excusing the rep, but I wouldn't be so quick to judge. People have done it themselves by accident regardless of intelligence.....it happens.

Plus a lot of older phones had the hole next to the tray, not part of it. Most likely just an accident, which can happen to anyone.

Go ahead spend a few months of your life trying to get Verizon to replace the phone that may or may not be damaged. Ain't worth the ball ache if you ask me.

I'm sorry but I never ever let any carrier store do anything to my phone. If the look like they are going to I stop them immediately.

Ok, first of all, the uBreakiFix guys are great! He walked me through what likely happened, and when I was in person, he ran it through a bunch of tests to make sure, all for free.

He checked the sound of the mic, and several other things.

A small hickup in the testing gave us pause: The test it failed at first was the Samsung water test (they check the pressure feedback when a weight is placed on the screen). But he looked and said he does it in a quick fashion first, and then gets much more careful with the tape to run it again. It then passed. He's "seen that happen a lot with the tape."

He also pointed out that the microphone on this phone is recessed enough....he's seen customers do this several times before with no ill effects----he speculates that Samsung took this into account with their design.

So it's good news. He did say that if anything at all happens, then by all means bring it back to him, they'll do their 3 hour diagnostic while opening up the thing (again, all for free). He's confident that it's ok.

THANK
YOU
EVERYONE!

So fingers crossed....

Awesome! Glad it's all sorted.

Quick aside, now I've got to go find a case ASAP.

Anyone checking these phones out be aware, good GRIEF, these devices are the most slippery things in the history of electronics! What do they make this out of anyway, some kind of hardened Vaseline?
