Verizon S3: How to get back to previous version and radios

Re: How to get back to previous version and radios

richgs,
You should start by pulling the battery for a couple of minutes. Then replace it and see if you can get into Recovery or Download mode.
If you can get into Recovery mode, go ahead and clear the cache and restart. Did you load an alternate Recovery?

Re: How to get back to previous version and radios

Then we went to Settings, More Settings, Mobile Networks, Global Data Roaming Access. He turned that setting to "Allow access for all trip." He said this menu is really mislabeled. I told him I am not going out of the country with the phone and he said this also turns on "roaming" to other carrier towers that my phone will connect to if they have a better signal. As long as you are in the US there is no charge for this. He said this is always set this way on his phones. I had already gone through all the other settings in this menu such as setting Network Mode to CDMA/LTE, and made sure LTE-Verizon Internet was checked in Access Point Names.

Thanks for the tip, but didn't help me. Good tip though...

Re: How to get back to previous version and radios

The instructions are for flashing a firmware, doesn't matter if it's an upgrade or downgrade. The instructions I posted are most definitely the right way. You only need to do the factory reset prior to if you're running a custom rom.

Sorry, didn't mean to question your knowledge, just wanted to make sure I was reading it correctly :)

Re: How to get back to previous version and radios

If you are NOT ROOTED... can you just flash the old radio or no?

Trust me, I'm far from an expert, this is the first time I've done anything like this. It is a little confusing since the instructions were written for upgrading firmware.

Re: How to get back to previous version and radios

Thanks, It work like a charm.. I rooted my POS yesterday for the 1st time with the intention of turning in back into a working smartphone via custom rom then after seeing your post I just finished flashing it back to MB1 which did break the root (big deal) cause it fixed the radio problem. Then I rooted it again. Now I have a real phone again.. Took me longer to download the MB1 file at 790mb than it did to do all that. Thanks again :)

Here is a nice and easy 1,2,3 step for rooting

I'm curious about this too. I see someone else posted the same instructions on the Verizon community forums.

So, the question is... for an unrooted phone... Will flashing the previous build work without losing all apps and data?

Yessir, I just did it :) I was unrooted with the new (and Crappy) update, and I rolled back to MB1 and I had all my stuff! But before rolling back and using Odin to go back to MB1 I would still recommend backing up all your things anyway its a good thing to do

Thanks. Downloading the full 771MB I535VRBMB1 firmware now. Taking a long time...

Re: How to get back to previous version and radios

I used the method published at DroidViews and successfully downgraded to VRBMB1. I didn't lose anything but after the rollback, my GPS wasn't able to get a lock. I ran into this problem before and a factory reset was what fixed it. After the reset, GPS works fine and 4G performance is back to normal.

The directions were written very clearly even for this nervous, non-tinkerer.

Re: How to get back to previous version and radios

Just to clarify though... Can you flash JUST the MB1 radio or must you flash the entire previous firmware version?

Re: How to get back to previous version and radios

I took the plunge... back to VRBMB1

Seems to have worked just like the directions and other members here have said. Takes longer to download the software then to complete the rollback. fingers crossed....

Well folks, wanted to come in here to say the downgrade to I535VRBMB1 was a success. All apps and data were there after the update. I did use the full 771MB firmware found on the previous post. Thank you all for the help. I'm so happy to have a working phone again.

It will only go into download mode. Got hung up during the upload to the phone after an hour I tried rebooting everything. It when I tried to reload the firmware again Odin just kept saying failed.

I would try to re-download the firmware file. I read another forum where someone's update kept failing and it turned out to be that he had a partial download of the firmware.

Unless there has been a major change the flashing of a radio requires root access. You could load the previous official ota if you can find it and it will load the old version of the radio.

Re: How to get back to previous version and radios

That is why I went the full stock firmware update. All apps intact and settings fine with simple flash over the tainted one.

Retro is good :)

It's dead...I cannot get it to do anything other than fail. Redownloaded all firmware and odin no dice.

Just let it sit for a while on the charger, pull the battery then pop it back in, hold the vol down button, home and the lock button down until you see a yellow triangle with an exclamation mark and try again :)
