Verizon Tiered Data Plan. Please Read This Post

It would be a massive PR nightmare not to mention a lot of lost revenue for Verizon. I just don't see that happening.

Exactly. Just for discussion purposes, have the Thunderbolt's sales figures been released? Let's say they've already sold 500k-1 million Thunderbolts (I don't know how realistic those figures are, as I don't pay much attention to sales figures). There's no way they can realistically expect all of those customers to change their data plan packaging 3-4 months into their contract. If they tried to force everyone to do that, it'd get them sooooooooooo much bad press, because it'd be such a mess of a situation, and a good portion of the people who already had the unlimited 4G package would be confused and annoyed having to suddenly adjust their plan just a few months after signing the contract.

I DO think they'll have moved to tiered data by the time the Bionic gets released, though, but I highly doubt us Thunderbolt owners that are already on unlimited 4G will be forced to change the plan or see a sudden price increase. I'm sure the option will be there, though.

Heck, if they had a data package of 1-2GB for about $15-20, I'd probably downgrade to that, to save some cash. I've been estimating my data usage on my iPod Touch for months, and I highly doubt I'd hit a gigs worth of data in a month, with my usage. I guess we'll see.

One thing I've learned in my years with Verizon, their reps have no clue what they are talking about

Yea i would downgrade from unlimited as well since i only use 2 GB max a month. I don't tether or anything like that so im good. Money is the ultimate factor.

Today I called Verizon to check up on the tiered pricing plan and when it will start and how it will affect those who buy a 4g phone before the rates go into affect.
This is what I was told.
1)Tiered pricing is scheduled to come out sometime in May.
2)If you buy a 4g phone prior to the tiered pricing plan you will have to choose a new data plan from the tiered pricing they have when it comes out. You will not be able to keep the exact data plan you have now for the same price you are paying today. Apparently they were giving people some time with the Thunderbolt to see how much data they are using and when the tiered pricing comes out you will have a better idea as to what type of pricing plan you want. Obviously if you have unlimited data for $30 and want to keep unlimited you can but it will cost more.
3)No grandfather clause. I read somewhere that you would be grandfathered in but he said no.
4)I asked how can they just change the cost structure of your plan when you have a contract and he said because your 2 year contract is for the phone not the plan as you can change your plan anytime you want within those two years. Kind of makes sense but I call foul anyway.

.

well i can say is when they try to force me to pay more i will then tell them where to and in a hand basket.. i will flat refuse to pay for the 2 yr contract because even if they say i bought the phone, i still was forced to buy a 30 data plan... with no options. i for one am tired of all big wig outfits and govt forcing me to do anything.. so they wont get their 350 bucks and i will run as much as i can thru my phone untill they cut me off,, probably way more than their teird plans and i'll do it on purpose... just because i can.. and nope i wont give 1" to verizon. we had decent services on this mtn..they loast a tower in storms etc and since a distant tower covered us ,, although ever so weakly, they messed up times etc ,, not EDT no more BUT CDT..and i live EDT.. so Verizon is on a short rope in this house at best..

I really hope they would keep me grandfathered in. I'd be more than happy to pay full retail price (eg. $600) for future 4G LTE phones as long as I keep the unlimited data, that's how much its worth to me. To me, getting a discount on my next phone isn't worth going to tiered data!

Well and for me it may be cheaper because I have the Talk, Text, and Data promo so I'm saving $240 a year on unlimited data because I'm getting it for $9.99 a month.

I may not be rich, But I got plenty O' F---You money, an thats exactly what Ill do. Ill whipe my arse with my last bill slap it on the counter, pay it an my ETF and give em the finger. Then Ill walk my "happy" freshly whiped arse next door an get a EVO 3D walk back next door an show VZW customers what a better phone on sprint costs a month.

They're not going to force people to change their contracts. You signed up for unlimited data, that's what you have and will have until your contracts up. Now should you upgrade your phone they may take the unlimited data away, in which case you just buy the phone out right and you're set.

Doesn't sound right to me...

My wife still has her old Alltel pricing plan because Verizon was contractually obligated to let her keep it when they bought Alltel out. Just my 2 cents.

Yep, Sprint has pretty decent coverage out here so if push comes to shove, ill sell my TB and pick up an EVO3D and and the unlimited everything plan.

Yea i caught that late. Im actually anxious for Verizon to begin their new 4g pricing so i can see which road i will be taking. I don't want to wait six months then just give my TB up. I need to decide soon.

It appears to be for a standard or feature phone because it's called "mobile web" rather than "data". I could be wrong and so could the article but I highly doubt Verizon would give data plans away for so cheap.

That's net neutrality getting a slap in the face right there. You should write your congressman and senator and tell them that they should support net neutrality. Do you realized that unlimited "web" wouldn't even cover your use of the Facebook app since it's not truly a mobile browser experience? Mobile Web was fine 6 years ago when we were all rocking Motorola Razr's.... but it's an arcane concept that mobile carriers use to "seem" like it's unlimited.

Don't get me wrong, I'm fine if they tier the data if that makes business sense for them. I'll either choose to pay it or not. But I think their use of "unlimited" to describe something that almost no one does anymore (surf to websites on their mobile browser) is pretty shady.

Also, the litmus test would be to ask the average consumer if they could describe what "mobile web" meant. The average consumer would tell you it meant everything they do on their smartphone.

It's a giant class action waiting to happen.

Even the T-Mob plan won't be unlimited since they say they will throttle data after 2GB. That leaves Sprint with the only TRUE unlimited data plan. And before anyone starts hating on Sprint, Verizon won't have LTE in my area until 2014 for instance, but Sprint has had WIMAX here for a year already, and it's the upgraded one that gives Sprint users 10 down, and 4 up. It rivals my WiFi connection at home. Since Verizon doesn't have a monopoly on the cell phone business in America, and there are competitors, a class-action lawsuit wouldn't even make it onto the docket. I really wish people would quit throwing class-action lawsuit, breach of contract, and assorted other legalese around when they don't know what they are talking about. Do people have a right to be mad? Hell yes they do, but as bad as some of the Verizon crowd slams the competition, it is now impossible for them to go anywhere else for fear of being a hypocrite.

i think the tiered pricing is aimed at the tehter/hotspot feature

they're giving ppl the free hotspot feature until they introduce the tiered pricing. i dont see them messing with the 29.99 Unlimited Email & Web for Smartphones plan simply because it doesnt include tethering / hotspot feature These features cannot be used to tether your device to laptops, personal computers or other devices for any purpose other than syncing of data; any other use is not permitted using these features.
