Verizon Tiered Data to start 7/07

I believe this is where Verizon's alleged data optimization comes into play. Besides, I don't believe that watching a Netflix video on a phone uses the same amount of data as a PC in general. Perhaps lower resolution and such.

Ok so a sd netflix movie is around 500mb. I can see a phone playing sd and it'll look good. So 4 movies and your done for the month. ;)

I still can't believe Verizon actually made AT&T look cheap. I get the whole "you get what you pay for" but does Verizon think they are actually going to get new smartphone customers with these prices. Sprint is looking better and better all the time.

Thanks for the link. I've been looking for a better Android site since the malware attack on this one.

Haha, my Norton 360 program alerted me of that too! I ignored it and figured I'd let Norton do it's job and so far no issues. :)

*sigh*

The uproar over this whole thing is just silly.

1. We do NOT have solid info yet as to what the new plans will be, and July 6 is only speculation as far as the timing goes. It's all rumors and old rumors at that.
2. Existing costumers will be fine as long as you don't remove your data plan or move to one of the new ones REGARDLESS of upgrading or changing phones as long as the new phone is compatible with the existing data plan (ie 3g smartphone data 4g smartphone data, etc)
3. Even when you re-up your contract you will most likely be allowed to keep your existing data plan. There are people out there on VZW under calling plans that have not been offered in years and they continue to be allowed to renew their contracts every year or two. (What happened with America's Choice was the exception not the rule)
4. Everyone with an unlimited 4G data plan now is grandfathered in until 4G unless a new line of phones comes out and are specifically stated to be not compatible with the existing 4G data plans and even in that case no one will force you till upgrade to that phone.
5. Even ATT didn't force people off of their unlimited data, the people who lost it were those who CHOSE to move to a tiered plan and are now no longer able to go back.

And once you are out of contract they don't have to honor the plan anymore. The contract and your right to a discounted price expire in 24 months regardless. I am not saying that they wont continue to honor it if you continue to pay the bill, but buying a phone full retail just to avoid changing your plan will not ensure that you get to keep your plan.

That's true and I didn't think of it like that. Just like we're saying they can't change our terms within the contract, they could turn that around and change it once the contract is over. The odds are that everything you said above is true so there is no need to worry.

Okay, just to clarify...I'm currently in an unlimited 3g data plan with my D'Inc. Does that mean I'm grandfathered into unlimited 4g data as well if i decide to renew my contact and pick up a future 4g phone at the discounted upgrade price after the tiered plan come into affect?

Please, let me know otherwise I will upgrade earlier to lock myself in.

That would be my guess. Once you sign a new contract you lose unlimited. I would be fine paying full price for a phone as long as I am unlimited. At&t is only unlimited if the people stay on an iPhone. If they switch to a Droid they no longer have unlimited data.

This is not true at all. You can switch phones, just not drop your data plan.

I think this is where they're gonna try to get people. I'll find out on AT&T when I go buy a new phone.

I don't believe that to be the case. If you renew your plan your signing a new contract. You will have to buy your phone at full price and go month to month in order to keep your unlimited data. At least that's what blackmanX says. Verizon is going to do what it can to get you to sign a new contract after July 7th.

And in case you don't everyone should follow Black_Man_X on twitter.

The feature code on accounts for unlimited data is "unlimited smartphone data" no distinction between 3G or 4G , there is a separate feature for 3g and 4g... Trust me;)

To add some confirmation, I just got word today that tiered data will be starting July 7th. I will be creating a new thread with details.

No. They are two different things. This is why so many people are rushing to get the Thunderbolt, Revolution, or Charge even if they are not ideal choices for them. They want to make sure they are grand-parented into unlimited 4g and will pay more for a better device later if need be.

From what Moreel said later in this thread I I would upgrade to a 4G device if I were you before July 7.

Here are links with info about tiered data. It is real and is going to happen on the 7th of July. You are grandfathered in if you have an existing contract. If you sign a new one, then you move to the tiered data. That is my understanding from reading the articles.

Again be careful; it's all basically rumors at a couple of blogs again.

Nope, you are grand-parented in.

Be careful even changing your phone can cause you to lose your grand-fathered rates. (down the road)

New phones can have FORCED restrictions that do not work with previous data plans.

When you signed your original contract it was for that phone and that plan together for that set amount of time. Any changes by you can effect this. This includes re-signing or changing devices.

Like it or not, it will be played out that way. They will find a way to get you out of those unlimited plans, all carriers find a way.

There is so much small print in your contracts that is made to make you lose.

I just thought of something. You could technically keep your plan forever.

hes how. If your on a 4g phone now with your plan and you get a new 4g phone. there is no esn swap that makes you choose plan and such. all you do is just put your old sim in your new phone and it works nothing changes. Then when its time for your upgrage for your current 4g phone just shift it to another line get the 4g phone sign up for tiered plan and do same thing take yhour new phone put your old sim in it and on new line just throw an old dummy phone on it and kill the data

As of Feb of this year new unlimited contracts have another caveate built in.
If you fall within the top 5% of data users you can be throttled and / or charged not only for the month of the infraction but the following month also.
This is probably not an issue for most but is worth noting particularly for power users.

I just heard this from someone I trust...these aren't rumors. Its true and it is indeed coming July 7.

Bummer.

Way to sell us a Ferrari Thunderbolt, let us drive it really fast....and then tell us the next time we wanna buy a Ferrari the tolls will go up. Sad Face.

You are grand fathered in ONLY until your contract ends. Once you renew your contract, you go to the tiered plan. Here it is from CNN:

"Customers currently under contract won't be affected by the changes, but new and renewing customers will likely have to accept the new, tiered plans."

Verizon to end unlimited data option - Jun. 21, 2011

The only escape is the word "likely." I really do not see how VZW is going to allow you to sign another contract and keep a non-existant plan. When I signed my new contract in June 9th with a smartphone, VZW did NOT allow me to keep my previous plan. Why? Because they do not sell it anymore.
