Verizon Tiered Data to start 7/07

You are grand fathered in ONLY until your contract ends. Once you renew your contract, you go to the tiered plan. Here it is from CNN:

"Customers currently under contract won't be affected by the changes, but new and renewing customers will likely have to accept the new, tiered plans."

Verizon to end unlimited data option - Jun. 21, 2011

The only escape is the word "likely." I really do not see how VZW is going to allow you to sign another contract and keep a non-existant plan. When I signed my new contract in June 9th with a smartphone, VZW did NOT allow me to keep my previous plan. Why? Because they do not sell it anymore.

Ive been told that if you sign a new contract after July 7th...your only options will be the new data tiers.

Who can you quote your source on that if you meant it for any contract signs (ie. renewals with phone subsidy purchases)?

There seems to be 2 camps right now and I was pretty close to going and getting myself a Charge this week but now im not so sure. Even the Verizon camp seems confused by this new policy that is coming.

OK, what frustrates me about the pricing is that they have taken the lowest tier, the 2gb (the 75 mb plan doesn't count), and is charging them the same price as the current unlimited plan. There is NO ONE who benefits from this pricing structure. The lightest users pay the same as currently, the moderate and heavy users pay more than currently.

My understanding with these tiered plans was that the lightest users would pay less than currently and the heavier users would pay a bit more than currently.

Vance, you're wrong about that, Verizon benefits from this pricing structure!

Well, obviously you are essentially correct. Their out though is to say people who don't have smart phones can save money by getting the 75 MB plan and save money! Now we all know anyone who uses that little data shouldn't be on an unlimited plan to begin with, but it does allow them to make their claim and do it truthfully. You have to love the marketing department.

I wouldn't be surprised if we were able to keep our current data plan. But at the same time, I wouldn't be surprised if we weren't allowed to keep the plan. I'm going to assume, based off the documents from indirect Verizon stores and other sources, that we'll be grandfathered in until we choose to change our plan.

Exactly!

Ambushbug, it would be just like Verizon spin to angle it that way. Only those who were somehow duped into getting an unlimited data plan on a texting phone are going to benefit by being able to get rid of their current plan!

The only honest way to live up their marketing ("some will pay lower and some higher") would be to target the current price ($30) squarely in the middle usage group, with a good chunk falling below that and able to fit into a lower priced tier comfortably. I honestly assumed my wife and daughter (about 800 mb a month users) would be able to pay less each month on a tiered pricing plan than their current plan.

I think I should buy both of them 4G phones right now so they can get the subsidized price and still keep their unlimited plan, then encourage them to stream music and movies all day! :0)

Yay its here! I meant boo sauce.
