This. Do current upgrades stay in place, or do they wipe the slate clean on the 13th? This would suck as I have 1 upgrade available, and another in 2 months.

A couple questions.

1. We all know Verizon doesn't really subsidize the device. That $400-$500 over 2 years is factored in your monthly rate. Will VZW lower your monthly bill accordingly? If the answer is no, that would mean Verizon just added another $20 per month, per device to your monthly bill.

2. 3 out of 4 lines on my plan have unlimited data. Will VZW force customers in to tiered plans in order to utilize their payment plans?

To me, this appears to be a money grab by Verizon. Hopefully I am wrong.

I'll stick with buying used phones and swapping my phones out online myself the way I've been doing it. I learned my lesson about buying a phone at full price about 4 years ago and I am not fond of Edge type programs where you have to turn in your phone to get a new one. Too much like a landlord having control.

Verizon no longer requires a trade in. The new program is a direct device payment plan with no option to upgrade early like the original edge plan.

If you are on a legacy family share plan where you don't get a discount for being off contract then you should push all the upgrades that you can before August 13th, assuming that you don't plan to move to the new plan.

Just get a Moto g and be done with it. Everyone I know just does social media and texts anyway. Who needs a $700+ anymore really?

Doesn't work on Verizon. The closest thing you have is the Moto e 2nd gen which runs for around $50ish usually though I picked mine up for $25 on sale a while back. Same cpu, gpu, ram, and internal memory as the base g. It is a prepaid phone so you would have to have an active 4GLTE sim card to use.

It's very difficult to compare your existing unlimited plans to these ones, but when compared to what's out now the new plans are virtually the same price. The objective here is that they wanted to simplify plans as they remove subsidies for new accounts.

This is another tactic by Verizon to get people off of unlimited data (and older plans). They won't lower your bill on the old non shared data plans

I would guess that on August 13th they won't let you upgrade via subsidized pricing anymore. Any upgrades available would be lost. I would recommend using any upgrade before then.

I have no idea how Verizon will implement it, if they will allow you to use device Payment plan on legacy plans.

Well if the plans are the same price, that would suggest a money grab. If the plan rates are reduced, then it might make sense. Verizon is very good at smoke & mirrors.

Verizon doesn't care if the plans are simple or not, they want figure out how to milk the customer to get the most money.

I'm not worried about lowering my bill per se. I'm more concerned with keeping my data plans. As for the payment plans, one could always purchase devices through BB or Google.

Most likely this Change won't impact you then since you don't buy phones through Verizon or its device payment plan.

Even if you were to buy a phone from Best buy you would still have to pay retail or put it on the Verizon installment plan if you're buying a Verizon phone.

Well I don't think Best buy offers the installment plan.

Most likely this Change won't impact you then since you don't buy phones through Verizon or its device payment plan.

I do use my upgrades when they're available. I have an upgrade available. I was hoping to wait and see what the fall season brings, but I guess I have to start searching for a new phone before the 13th.

Okay, I spoke to a higher level rep via chat yesterday, and she told me that once my contract is up, I wouldn't be able to renew it. If I wanted to upgrade, I'd have to move to one of the new plans.

HOWEVER, I just got off the phone with a rep, and she told me that they had a meeting about the new plans yesterday. She said that if I'm on a contract now, I'm grandfathered in and am able to renew the contract and get a subsidized phone on the same plan I have now. It's just that if I want to change plans, I'll no longer be offered a contract. I called again and asked another rep who confirmed it.

So, as of now, it looks like if you're currently on a contract and want to continue on that same contract, you can do so.

Right. I plan on calling again after the 13th and confirming. My contract ends on the 29th, and I'm on the loyalty plan ($60 for 2GB, unlimited talk/text, subsidized phone), so this issue is of particular importance to me. My bill will go up significantly if I'm forced off a contract. The last rep I spoke to completely understood my position because before she worked for Verizon, she was on the loyalty plan, as well.

Is the key to keeping unlimited data to use the sim card in my current phone? I have a 2013 Moto X, really like it and really like the look of the 2015 X which I think comes out in September. My current two-year VZ contract coincidentally expires Sept 15. If I buy the new X directly from Motorola through MotoMaker, and just put my current sim in it when it arrives, and not a new sim that ships with it, will that let me keep my UDP?

Thanks so much for the quick reply and confirmation. I was hoping that was the case. I got the X though that beautiful glitch on the VZ website two years ago where for one glorious weekend you were able to buy a new phone at a subsidized price AND keep your unlimited data. They quickly fixed it on Monday, but realizing it would have been a pr nightmare they let anyone who ordered during that weekend keep their unlimited plan. So I pay $29.99 for UDP and get a 20% discount through my employer which knocks off $6, so I end up paying $23.99 for UDP, which wouldn't even get me 1 GB at their new prices. I DO NOT WANT TO LOSE THAT!
