Verizon turned on 5G nationwide.

Faster speeds would be nice but when it gets down to it, all I really need is to be able to stream whatever I wish when I wish and surf the web without slow downs.
Yeah and regardless of available speeds some carriers will restrict high resolution content.

I did end up getting an update today. Verizon, Note 20 Ultra. Said it was so I could start receiving the 5G "nationwide" signal, so I installed it. But I'm still not seeing 5G on the phone in areas where their map show it should be firmly 5G.

Now that Verizon supposedly turned on nationwide 5G...Anyone getting it? Show us your speedtest :-)

Nope! And on the map looks like i would get it in southeast Michigan however I'm not. Still on 4G

Same here. Did the update but still on 4G

Does anyone know if I should leave my settings on cdma/lte or global? Which is better for my battery?

The last I knew, neither one is better than the other. I think you still want cdma/lte if you are in the U.S. However, I could very easily be wrong, and if someone else contradicts me, they may be right. I am basing my answer on info that is a few years old.

I received the update this morning and it showed 5G on my phone. When I speed tested it, it was no faster than LTE though. I'm in the Greenville, SC area.

Does Verizon need a special 5G plan like AT&T? Ib had to switch plans on AT&T to get the new nationwide 5G. But don't expect speeds that are crazy significant. You'll only get those speeds on mmWave 5G which is still scarce.

From what I've seen posted you don't need a special plan for the 5G rollout being talked about. You may need it depending on your current plan for UltraWideBand 5G

Someone in the S20 thread it only works outdoors but don't hold me to that.

Global allows for roaming on GSM networks. So it would help in areas without CDMA/LTE. I leave on Global and let the phone decide, although I think I've only been on GSM when I've been out of the country.

I don't think you can have a plan on Verizon with a Note 20 5G phone that does include 5G. Our Verizon plan for sure includes it.

So I left home and yes indeed I see 5G however so painfully sloowwww.

Lowband does not require a special plan from what I'm hearing.

If they only have mmWave 5G in their area then that's sounds about right. mmWave 5G only has an effective range about 500-1000 feet from the tower and heard it doesn't go through walls very well as objects blocking line-of-sight between tower and phone.

I noticed they are installing mini towers outside my neighborhood and told these are AT&T mmWave antennas. There were two of these about 1000 feet apart and guessing there will be more.

I can see it in the city where you can put one of these one every city block intersection to make a grid. But a grid of mini towers in the suburbs?? Instead of Parkland, they'll have to rename my city Tower-land.

The other 5G band that are mounted on the tall towers we are use to... 2 mile range I've read. :-\

5G sounds still very gimmicky and early stage. Luckily I have good 5GE speeds in my area :p

We have utility poles in many of the suburbs

Yes, I've seen pics on Google where they also mount on top of utliity poles, street light poles, street signs and poles with the walk lights, etc. But as you can see, they are installing concrete poles in my hood.

That's just awful.....some of the more affluent towns in my county still won't allow cell towers or anything that would disrupt the town's landscape. We also have cell towers that attempt to look like trees.
