Verizon Update - HTC 10

Mo Versi has posted out on Twitter today that it looks like the Verizon HTC 10 will see an update tomorrow...

I read a good article about phone updates. People think Android updates are slow. But they are comparing them to Apples ability to push out updates. Apple has to push their updates through carriers for testing as well. However, they don't release the update until the major carriers have signed off. The article said iOS and Android updates take around the same time. Google announces updates when they are complete. Then the cell phones manufacturers announce it when they are complete. Then the OS has to go through the carriers. If they did what Apple does nobody would think the updates are slow.

Apple issues updates through their own servers. They absolutely don't need the approval of the 200+ carriers out there in the world that sell iPhones. It is delusional to think that they do.

Why do people keep posting their location when it comes to an update popping up on their phone? That is not how the update process works.

iOS has to be tested on carrier networks prior to release just like Android has to be tested. No carrier can afford for every iPhone on their network to crash at the same time due to an update. Because the carrier would take the blame for the crashes, not Apple. Not to mention if you allow phones on your network that are not programmed properly can crash your network. Hence Verizon has such strict protocols. They are the #1 carrier for a reason.

Carriers DO test iOS betas, but they actually have NO control over whether or not it gets released. Apple releases the betas to partners, and if there are no glaring issues, they release the actual OS update. Period.

If you are Verizon and you DON'T test the beta, you might have issues and then iPhone users will be displeased with your network and go to a different one. So carriers certainly do NOT screw around with Apple releases.

If you are Samsung or HTC, the Carriers update the device so the carriers literally sit on them for 6 months after they are actually available.

Well that is partly true that carriers do test iOS updates but they are still controlled by Apple. Apple gives them a deadline and the carriers plan it accordingly. They will bend over back to Apple the same way Android OEMs bend over back to carriers. Apple controls everything. If you are buying an iPhone buy it anywhere, if you are buying an Android phone buy the unbranded phone not the carrier models.
