Verizon's new plans

I just got a text from a rep. She says that you have until the 28th to upgrade or you are forced into a plan

Verizon really moved fast on the plan changes taking effect. Tiered plans weren't put into effect for quite some time after they made the first announcements. I'm gonna live it up & rack up ridiculous GB #'s over the course of my current contract.

Yeah you know, I am thinking the same damn thing. I am ready to cancel the FIOS and run a hotspot for a few months

I am with you.... I usually am calm about this kinda crap... But right now I am a bit livid

On one hand, I am glad I just upgraded, but on the other, even though I've guaranteed myself 2 years of unlimited....I'm ready to switch to Sprint because this is corporate greed at it's worst. I get that bandwidth is unlimited, but the pricing of these plans is outrageous. I actually thought that maybe a pool of data would be good for most, but this is more expensive for most. Most people use around a gig per month. Pool a family plan on 4 gigs for $70 and hey, verizon just saved themselves 4 gigs of bandwidth that those four lines (at the limited 2 gb plans) could have used up. The trade off for the users is that they pay less. But the $40 per line on top is OUTRAGEOUS! Now those same users are giving up a lot of bandwidth, and paying the same.

I'm done and out after 15 years.

I'm on a little over 30gb of data (I start over tomorrow) 2,000 text and 14 minutes phone use (I don't like talking on the phone) .... I can't imagine paying what they are about to charge for all of that lol.

Now I'm not saying this to be negative towards you. I'm saying this because most people don't seem to understand. Bandwidth is an on demand commodity that is self replenishing. So whether you use a terabyte or 256k of data, so long as you stop at some point the bandwidth you were using is immediately replenished. So if Verizon has a terabit pipe in my area and I download at full speed on my phone I'm barely touching the capability of the pipe. And once I'm done streaming/downloading/whatever, they get their bandwidth back.

I could understand placing some bandwidth restrictions in more densely utilized areas(until they can beef up infrastructure). But these charges are nothing more than a cash grab. Hell, their own location service(that they force fed everyone in the GB OTA) uses data. And here's the kicker. Say you only have 1GB, your phone counts everything...even what they "don't count against you". So the average user is going to get overly worried when they get the ICS OTA which should be around 600MB and think they just busted their data cap. Especially if they're some of the poor SOB's that have to download it multiple times.

Not that they hear my ire, but Verizon...a pox on all your houses.

So from all post I have read this is huge disappointment to power users and people possibly who illegally were tethering or using way more than the normal user for data. So average user which is 90 percent of smart phone users don't pass the 2g monthly more, will be largely unaffected. Now of course we know every carrier has plans, promotions, discounts, ect..come and go..so yeah loss of unlimited data on 3g or 4g sucked. Yet we all knew this was coming and would really only benefit folks with 3/4+ lines and NORMAL usage. Verizon does not care about the power users or unlimited would still be around. So if anyone thinks that those power users complaining over social media will make Verizon change it's prices must also believe unlimited data will be coming back too.

I paid for nearly 7 years $225 + a month for 3 lines and now just have my single line with basic plan and grandfathered in unlimited data. So keep in mind I KNEW as many others did that unless I was willing to pay retail to provide my own equipment I would lose unlimited data. Many others know how changes with total coverage plans, minute plan changes, data plan changes do not allow you to renew a contract and always keep those features, this process has exsisted way before Verizon and will continue to be way it works for some time to come.

I am on my phone all the time..all day and barely hit .5 to 1gig a month. I do not tether and I do not use wifi at work or at home, but I do not stream a ton of video either. Do I feel pain for people who NEED more than 2 gigs of data per month at a cost, of course I do. I just and not blind enough to think that power users have EVER been Verizon main customer base or concern to make happy with data plan options.

I see that you have a thunderbolt. Do you get 4G in your area? It seems that I have similar behavior to you, except for streaming music at work, and I am at 7GB right now.

I cant speak for anyone but myself, but I regularly hover around 5 gigs a month and I do not tether. I have a long commute to work and streaming audio is my main source of entertainment. My point is, that "power use" is possible without cheating the system. What people are missing is that one day in the near future "power" use will be normal use and the Wireless companies have set up the ground work to over charge us for every single inch of it.

So yeah, Im not ok with it. However Im not making it my mission to let Verizon know how unhappy I am. Ill game it...one more subsized phone for me and the next wont be. Aslong as they let me keep the unlimited feature Ill keep it. Once they dont, Ill have to to explore my options.

Jesus christ!
How did she spell "tiered" wrong?

Apparently that extra CSR training fee does not go towards spelling. BTW, I wonder what the corporate sales staff thinks about these new plans? They seem like a "quota killer" to me. How many current customers are going to want to upgrade after the 28th if it means losing their current Plan?

This will just trade one quota killer for another. Verizon has been chopping down what the reps make per sale for awhile now. The current quota killer is the iPhone. The iPhone is the crack of the mobile industry, dont like selling it cause the margins are razer thin but cant afford to not carry it because everyone wants one.

So currently they get dinged hard if they cant sell a 4G Android device over an iPhone. That hurts thier numbers.

Now that these new plans are coming and the iPhone will likely go 4G next round, these new plans will be the next important metric. They will be pushed to get everyone into the pay per gig game. Obviously the share plans being the preferred sale over the individual plans because the data costs more.

hmm...maybe they should spend part of that $30 upgrade fee towards a dictionary...

Every time I've been in a Verizon store in the last year plus(since they started selling the iPhone) Verizon sales reps have been pushing the iPhone....HARD. I can't believe that they make less on an iPhone sale than they do on an Android sale.

ok then, let's assess my situation, putting in a minimal data usage scenario:

CURRENT PLAN = $130:
$60 for 2 lines at 550 min/mo family loyalty plan
$20 for 2 additional dumb phone lines at $10 per line
$30 unlimited data one line
$20 300 mb/mo data one line

SHARED PLAN = $190:
$80 for 2 lines of smartphone
$60 for 2 lines of dumb phone
$50 for 1gb shared data

So, assuming I used minimal data, it would cost me nearly 50% more per month on the shared data plan. Yes, I get unlimited calls and text, which is useless to me since I don't even get close to 550 minutes and no one on my plan uses regular text (Google Voice FTW). Now, even when paying nearly 50% more, I am only getting less than 2% of the bandwidth that I got on the current plan.

I am getting shafted either way you look at it, from a basic user standpoint, or from a power user stand point.

I can tell you its a fact that they make more money selling Android 4Gs devices. What you expierenced is a result of a sales team thats trying to fight returns which also hurts thier numbers, it basically nullifies thier sale.

A lot of sales reps would rather make less money up front and play it safe by selling iphones, knowing that the return rate is lower as compared to Android devices. However at thier meetings you can bet your ass they are being chastised for that.

P.S. I just stumbled across this article. Sourced from BGR to CNN Money.
