I obtained my GNex on release day and I endured just about every issue mentioned in these forums. Due to my work using Good For Enterprise for work email it was not possible for me to root my phone and self correct the issues. (Good gives administrators root detection tools that they can use to boot rooted devices off the corporate network.) I patiently remained locked and stock hoping for a quick release of the 4.04 OTA. During this time I found myself second guessing myself regarding if I was a good fit for a Nexus device. Now that the 4.04 OTA has finally arrived I am really happy with the phone. Almost every issue I had has been addressed, and my GNex is super stable and reliable. My GNex is now my favorite phone and it has energized me to want the Nexus 7. This phone took a pretty good beating in the forums before the OTA was pushed, especially by those that were unable or unwilling to root their device, but things seemed to have stabilized a lot. Is everyone having the same stable experience I am having since the OTA? Just thought I would try to evoke a positive discussion about this phone after it got off to such a rough start.

I have loved my Nexus since day one but I am of the rooted variety. I have never had any of the problems other have had. I will be buying the Nexus 7 in the next few days.

I am a root wimp myself and am very pleased with the fixes with 4.0.4. The only issue with the phone now is the physical limitations of the weaker radios (4G specifically). I am in the heart of VZW's 4G territory but have trouble getting any 4G signal in my home and at my office. At one end of my office building---full strength 4G. 50ft away and at my desk---no 4G. At my home, I am lucky to get a tiny 4G signal. A quarter mile away---full strength 4G.

All in all, though, I am very happy with the phone but I learned some harsh lessons with this being my first "gotta have" device. I'll be much more cautious with my next device selection and will enter into it with much lower expectations because, in hindsight, the supposed review by sites like this one always seem to miss the truly important parts as they tend to focus on size, screen color reproduction, physical feel and high-level first impression UI review.

Next time...I'll have more realistic expectations. That should ensure I enjoy whatever device that much more!

I am a rooter as well, however I kept my phone stock for 2 months before I unlocked it and put the leaked 4.0.4 update on it. The issues before the OTA were frustrating for sure. I give kudo's to anyone who endured them because they were unable to root their device for reasons similar to the OP's. Hopefully for you guys it has all worked out in the end.

And as far as the Nexus 7 goes, I will not be partaking of the JB tablet. Work just got me a shiny new iPad (gulp dont jump me for speaking iWords) and I no longer have a need for a tablet solution anytime in the near future.
