Very unscientific but I measured my M8 screen with a ruler

I measured my M8 screen with a ruler. By removing the HTC logo, HTC can easily fit a 5.5" screen in the current M8 body. I wonder if they will do this for the M9?

There's likely a reason that they didn't (assuming this is true). Bigger screen means more power needed from the CPU and GPU, more heat, etc.

To me it looks like even if they replaced the logo bar space with screen, there'd still be part of it left, because they can only expand the sides so much and keep the same aspect ratio. I don't think they could just get rid of it all though. The G2 has an edge to edge display, but they moved the volume buttons to the back. The speakers make a good amount of room unusable because of the amplifying chambers, so a lot of the bezel is most likely needed, because they need room for the volume and slot parts underneath and large chunks are already reserved. I'm not saying they can't get rid of it, but it would probably be hell to redesign it without radically changing the whole look of the device and make it even denser than it already is.

An insane amount of engineering goes into the sizing of different components. Rest assured that no phone manufacturer would add a few millimeters of empty, hollow space just for a logo.

I hope not, instead I hope that they work on making the phone smaller while keeping the same screen size. I Don't want a the phone any bigger than it already is.

This.

I still remember my printed circuit board class when in college for drafting and design. One of the hardest classes I took, and that was just the entry level class (thankfully that wasn't my specialty and just a "so you know" class). It's one thing to lay a circuit out on paper, but trying to lay it out on a PCB of limited space while also maintaining tolerances was a major PITA!

Lol, I didn't mean to imply that they dropped the ball on the screen. I know why that bottom bezel is there, and I love my phone. My point was that maybe with a slight reworking of the internals, they could make the M9 with a bigger screen in the same size case...

Agreed. In a perfect world of design, it would have been nice to have that space be dedicated to the standard Android keys instead of taking screen space. I'm used to it now but that was one of my few negative take-aways initially with this phone vs. my DNA. There's actually less screen space with them on-screen.
