Video ads - They are out of hand...

I get the idea behind a website, I understand the NEED to advertise. It's a true need, not just something you want to do. I get that...

But these video ads are getting out of hand! There are commonly 4 video ads while trying to browse the forums, they are all yelling at you about different things, I can berely keep up with muting them to get them off my speakers. Then, as they are refreshing, I can't scroll anymore because they are locking up the browser.

AC, I love you guys, I really do, but I'm about to ditch this place because solely of your video ads. These forums just aren't worth being in anymore.

Sorry bout that, I actually looked around for a moment or two to figure out where to put it.

OHHHHHH! IS THAT what is causing my browser to lock up every 2 minutes and my typing to be 10 characters behind half the time I am on this forum. It is driving me absolutely nuts !!

This is the ONLY forum I have ever been on (and I have been around forums (fora?) longer than most people here probably have been alive! :D It makes reading next to impossible and makes for a very poor experience.

How about a "contributors" level of membership when all that crap gets turned off for $10-$20 lifetime sub fee? It really is annoying and totally intrusive. I have sound turned off so I don't hear anything.

Hmmm, Maybe disabling FLASH would stop it? It REALLY is out of hand.

@Bas You have a couple of options:

  • Leave AC (as you've suggested)
  • Ignore the ads
  • Use an adblocker like adblockplus attached to your web browser
  • Use Opera Web Browser which removes these ads to begin with

Yeah that's not an answer, the answer is use the app

Posted via Android Central App

@thatguy97 may not be an answer to you and others.. but Opera Max & Opera browser have eliminated any unwanted ads and apps.. I'm in control again.

@BasPilot - first of all, THANK YOU for reporting your issues here. I appreciate feedback always (positive or negative), and I know ads have historically been a 'touchy' subject, to put it lightly.

We do report any ad issues we experience to our ad partner, and they handle from their end. If you can provide more information for me to report, that'd be fantastic.

As I browse the forums today I haven't had one video ad, but it comes and goes. :)

Thanks in advance for your help - and thanks for joining us here at AC!!

Just to be honest, I don't actually access AC from the web, however, I have to say that from my experience with other web sites that have auto play video ads...(looking at you Gawker), I do agree that auto playing video ad suxed and do cause problems, and are a complete annoyance.

I went to this section of the forums to post about this myself and found this thread with others having the same issue. The ads are completely out of control. I like to browse on my laptop which is a $2000 plus Asus Zenbook with 12 GB RAM and a nice Nvidia graphics card and I can barely even use your site at all.

Within seconds of viewing these forums my fans spin up crazy fast, scrolling stutters and it takes up to 10 seconds for pages to load while all the ads start up. The ad that seems to take the longest is the banner ad at the top of the page. On top of this I have gigabit fiber internet service with speeds of 950mb/sec that loads other sites almost instantly. This forum is the slowest site on the internet for me. I enjoy the site but am losing patience.

thank you for suggesting about opera, this site runs so much better on this web browser. i still use chrome for everything else but you have saved AC for me.

@TOASTERvan

Well, first, I use chrome because I use multiple devices and I can get a single change to one and it goes across all platforms, I don't know if opera does that, have used it in the past but that was a long long time ago. So that's off the table here.

HOWEVER, using chrome I did take the advice of trying the adblocker and then I came back for a tour of the website, along with many others. This website just a few moments ago was pretty cluttered down the right side. No video ads TODAY, that's also true, but yesterday there were... BUT, THIS MOMENT, there is nothing down the right side of my screen. This makes this website fly. I mean fly. So, I'm glad I complained about something, stand by that video ads are pretty much the worst thing on the net... okay, close to it... but this adblocker that I got seems to work well.

Over the past few days there has been a huge improvement in the speed to which these pages load using my laptop (the mobile site has always been faster). Although it is still one of the slower sites I visit, these forums no longer make my fans spin up as much or stutter and lag when trying to scroll. And I no longer get the annoying IBM ad on every page. Thanks for the improvements!

I've had to abandon at least 3 comments today because in the middle of typing the comment my keyboard stops responding - and in two cases I had to force-close Chrome to shut down the Android Central tab (all other tabs were working just fine, but attempting to shut down the Android Central tab was completely futile). It's starting to stutter again so I guess I'd better hit POST on this before it locks up again.

EDIT TO ADD: Hit refresh a few times and it really stutters badly with some sort of "X Ray Vision VSP Vision Care" ad, which was running 4 simultaneous instances of the same video in my browser window. So that ad seems to be a major culprit at the moment.

I'll be honest - I hate ads. But I know they pay for web sites. So I will not block them and continue to consume the content they pay for.

Most of the ads are fine. The inline banner ads are usually okay. The "you might want" Amazon ads are fine. Sometimes (rarely) even interesting and relevant.

The annoying "Trending now" Revcontent ads really make a site look trashy, but they don't actually affect the performance of the web site, so whatevs, if they are paying the bills I'll do my best to ignore their content like I do when I see similar content on the trash tabloids at the grocery store.

The video ads are the real site killers. Make the site look as gunky as you want, and if there is good content people will keep coming back for more. And AC has GREAT content. But make the site randomly stop working and even us crusty old diehards who have been around for a while will tend to stop by less frequently.

@natehoy - I have noticed a few today as well. And you're right, the video ones can definitely bog down the 'ol system. Thanks for reporting, I make sure these notices get sent to our ad partner for resolution.
