Android Central Question

Video quality is terrible.
My video quality sucks!! I have a note 8. It takes good videos but when I send them via text or post them, the quality is horrible. What settings should I have on?

from a texting perspective, the video quality will always reduce because you can only send small files.
What site are you referring to in regards to posting

this is typical with SMS. use a good messenger like Allo or telegram to send fill res pics and vids. you can also send them in links with Samsungs link share app

SMS wouldn't have been able send video.

Messengers will automatically downgrade to whatever they allow. so feel free to shoot in whatever quality you prefer.

SMS usually has a max MMS size of 1mb

SMS and MMS are two different things.

Most people I send information to are Apple users. I was a former Apple user but got bored. What should the video settings be? Thank you.

There are no video settings to tweak if you use Allo on Android and iPhone.

Don't send the video. Go into Google Photos and send a link to the video instead.

MMS, multi media message, is how SMS sends pics & video. Messengers don't use MMS, only data.

SMS is a texting standard.

MMS is a media message standard.

MMS is not how SMS sends pics and videos because SMS doesn't do pics and videos.

Splitting fine hairs. If you are using a text app, SMS/MMS, you have no choice in the matter as they work in tandem. Protocols are different but the usage for the end user is the same.

But it doesn't change the ever so annoying problem of crappy pics and videos from m Androids messaging. In the near future universal RCS should be implemented, Verizon notwithstanding, and the issue should go away.

You do have a choice.

If it's text-only and under 160 characters, it should (and will) be SMS.

If it's text-only and over 160 characters, it can either be multiple SMS messages or a single MMS message.

If it has any media attached to it, it's automatically MMS.

If it's a mass text under 160 characters where you want individual replies, it's SMS. Over 160 characters can be either split SMSs or a single MMS), but still shouldn't be a group message.

If it's a threaded group message where you want everyone to see the replies, it's MMS.

"MMS, multi media message, is how SMS sends pics & video." is an incorrect statement.

The ever so annoying problem of crappy pics and videos from Android's messaging is not Android's fault.

All true. I am explaining from a broad point of view. No one cares about that much detail. A person picks up an app, they send text or they send a pic, they don't care about the fine detail, they want it to work, SMS and MMS and have outlived their usefulness for the exact reason you pointed out. We want something that works and or current text apps don't anymore.

No, Google is not at fault completely. They have the ability to merge the apps, Allo, duo, messages, and gives us exactly what we want. So while they cannot control carriers and RCS they can be faulted for not giving us a good app that circumvents the problem.

That is exactly why we have so many topics and comments exactly like this one. "I moved to Android, pictures and videos are bad. What? You want me to get all of my friends to switch apps because Android is a hot mess?*

Outside of RCS, merging Allo, Duo, Android Messages, Hangouts will do nothing for cross-platform messaging. Google merges their messaging efforts and iOS people will still have to download a separate messaging app.

RCS is the only universal solution.

(other than Apple opening up iMessage to Google Play - and only because it's a two-platform race now).

I don't want Android to Android messaging being hijacked by a non-standard, non-open messaging platform.

All true. But our choice right now is limited. If Google merges the apps we can just download it and not wait for all the carriers to comply. Or wait for RCS and get what we want, but we are still beholden to the carriers. Neither of which are compatible with imessage. But at least with a messenger like Allo or Whatsapp anyone can download it.
