Video stuttering?

I have noticed that the Nexus 7 doesn't seem to play back video reliably for me. I can stream video from YouTube and such fine but when I watched my free copy of transformers either streaming or cached on my device every 15 minutes or so it would pause for a second before continuing. I noticed this also occurs in doggcatcher while playing videos that are more than about 3-5 minutes long.

Anybody else have this issue or know how to fix it?

Anytime I have seen that kind of problem on mine, it is the result of a bad streaming source (slow connection) or a bad / improperly configured vid player app. The first thing I would try is another player. MX player seems to work for most of the files I use so far, so you could try that one if you don't already.

You also can turn on/off the various player internals like hardware or software decoding, etc. which can also affect performance issues like those you are seeing.

Well the transformers movie was played via Google's player since it has Google's drm. Doggcatcher has its own built in player which also stutters, but it can send it to mx player or a external player which I tried. I had it play in mx player and it too stuttered after about 3 minutes of playing.

Seems to stutter no matter the player.

One more thing to try

Shut off sync, GPS, bluetooth, wireless (if you are not streaming), etc and then go into apps>running and shut down everything that should not be running OR use an app the closes / cleans out unnecessary running apps.

After you have done that, try MX player again and see what happens. Running background processes CAN slow down Memory I/O and cause stuttering.
One badly behaved app is all it would take.
