Vignette app takes better pictures than the stock camera app

Has anyone noticed any difference between leaving it with the normal settings for the frame and changing it to fullscreen? I noticed on normal the pics don't fill the screen like they do in the stock app but I don't know if they are the same size just cropped differently or what

if your stock camera is set to 8MP then your photo will be 3264x2448
if you put a checkmark in the Widescreen setting your photo will be 3264x1952

If you shoot Vignette with frames set to none your photo will be 3264x2448
If you shoot Vignette with frames set to Fullscreen your photo will be 3264x1958

Or at least those are the resolutions my Incredible shoots - if anyone wants to give me an X to play with I'll gladly report back ;)

Anyone done comparisons in low light and/or pics w/ flash? Just curious if there are noticeable differences.

Thanks for getting back on the megapixel question. This shows that the camera is fully capable but HTC's decisions for compression are hurting us. I have the stock camera app set to 3mp and High quality. I'll have to do some comparison shots with Vignette and see what happens.

I'll have to buy the full version though to take higher resolution pictures. The demo limits it to less than 1 megapixel.

Just a quick observation - looks like the main difference is vignette didn't overexpose the photos as much as stock. In another thread, there seemed to be a suggestion that vignette actually focuses better. If that's the case, I definitely want to give it a try. That's my main gripe with the camera (besides the so so quality in general in comparison to a certain competing phone)

Ok, I bought the full version so I could do my own comparison. It is definitely a JPG compression difference.

Vignette's Superfine mode is a lot less compression than HTC's High mode. Vignette's Fine mode is almost the same as HTC's High mode.

This tells me that HTC could change their modes or add another higher one to improve the picture quality.

Vignette takes a long time to process the pictures at any setting so it's not good for taking a bunch of snapshots. The program does seem to handle the flash better. Would have to do some more tests to see how much better. I couldn't see how to get it to spot focus but it may be doing it when you touch the screen to take the picture since there is no dedicated shutter button.

Definitely an interesting app but not sure that most people would want to buy another camera app.

Ah, in the settings you can set it to focus when you touch the screen but then you have now way to take the picture. I'd assume that works on phones with a dedicated shutter button or that work with another button on the phone. Maybe they could make it work with the volume buttons.

What if you hold down when focusing? I dont have the app [yet]...but maybe that's it?

IIRC, once you tap to focus, you hit the search button to take the photo.

What Metering Mode did you use for the stock app photos?

To me, it doesn't look like the Vignette photos are "better," they just have a shorter exposure. Like in the first photo, you get more sky detail in the photo, but the car is under-exposed when you look at the Mustang logo, the lights, the blower, and the "Thunderstruck" label. On the stock app photo, there is a lot more detail on the car. But, if you dialed back the Exposure Compensation (for whatever reason the app calls it Brightness) on the stock app, you would have gotten identical photos between the two apps without changing the metering mode. I don't know if the two apps use different metering modes or if you tweaked any settings, but that's really the only difference between the comparison shots. I wish the apps recorded real Exif data so we can actually see what's going on.

It really comes down to personal preference when shooting under those conditions. Do you want clouds in the sky (highlights) or more detail in your subject (usually darker area)? Some like to choose to slightly under-expose and brighten up in post processing as you can lighten dark areas, but you can't recover blown out highlights. But if you generally plan on using photos as is, you might want to go with the method that properly exposes the subject at the cost of some highlight detail.

The second photo of the engine definitely looks better to me... Looks alot more crisp and clear.. The other pic almost looks out of focus.. But it could be the way the pic was taken..

For me it definitely takes the picture when you tap the screen. It does the spot focus where you touch and then the shutter. The find button just seems to use the standard auto focus.

I also found that if you have the zoom control on the screen, the volume buttons work the zoom in and out. Of course digital zoom is just cropping so it shows you what it is going to crop.

In digital camera forums there were always debates about the usefulness of digital zoom. If it is done before JPG compression then it is better than just cropping a JPG to the same size. Still not the same as physical zoom.

I got the paid app, and like it for the most part. So far can't see much of a difference in the pictures, though I like the better layout of controls.

What I can't figure out is when you have it set for no crop... it crops the photos anyway by default on my Evo. The native camera app doesn't do that.

I'm a professional photographer, too... so I'll be checking out this app and doing some comparisons. Wishing I could get that native DroidX app that does panoramas. Maybe it will appear in the Market at some point.

I think the claim that the iphone 4 camera is better than the evo camera is really based on software. The stock evo camera app just isn't very good, and the Vignette app IMO takes pictures equal to the iphone 4. Now to get the video camera on par...

Ok, I guess I need help. I downloaded the paid version of vignette and I thought the pictures looked a bit worse. The reason being that it seems like it takes much darker pictures. I was taking a shot indoors and the stock app looked a bit better. Actually, a lot better. Am I doing something wrong? I want an app that uses the power of my cameras like vignette, but it didn't seem better at all. Again, all I took were indoor photos.

That's really weird. I've yet to take a picture with the stock camera app that's better than the Vignette. Vignette pictures do come out a little darker, but the colors are always more accurate and richer and things look much more clear. You try raising the ISO on the Vignette? Usually if I'm indoors I have it at 200-400 depending on how dark it is.

I love the app I bought it after op's recommendation I used it ky entire vacation people could not believe the shots were taken with my phone my only complaint is how slow the gallery runs I had 100+ shots taken with vignette and it would take like five mins to load the gallery

Thanks for the recommendation this app really makes the camera shine

bought Vignette last night and just started playing around with it. so far so good. I'll try and post some pics tonight.

I like Vignette but I've noticed that photos taken with the app seem a bit fuzzier than the stock app. I've taken several pics using both and the stock app just seem clearer.

Complete opposite with me. Every picture I've ever taken looks clearer than the stock and the colors look richer and closer to how it actually looks in person. Make sure you have a steady hand, you're on 8mp, and you focus the right way.
