What's the difference with tethering to save a step? It's the same data over the same network, but only one method is acceptable?

Difference being it is their network. If they so dont do it or we will cancel then you dont do it.
Thing is most carriers dont really care about the occasional tither or wifi hotspot.
Its the people that bought the phone just to tether. Why pay 60 bucks a month for internet to check facebook and surf porn when you can pay 25 and do the same thing?

Nah, I'm still going to use as much data as I want in any way I please. I'm pretty sure that just like our $25/mo plans will be grandfather in, so will the the "unlimited" data we were promised. They can't simply change the terms after they lure you in with a low rate and require you to invest in their phone. Even At&t and Verizon grandfathered in their current customers with unlimited plans. I'm not worried.

The biggest reason VM exploded in the past few months was the $25 for unlimited data plan. Being the geniuses they are, they killed that plan and their edge over the competition. With Boost Mobile's $35 unlimited everything plan on the same Sprint network AND being truly unlimited, why would anyone get VM's $35 300 min plan with only 2.5GB of data? If I didn't have the grandfathered $25 plan, I would switch. There are even ways to switch the Optimus over for use on Boost Mobile.

This is a company that through terms of use,can change things on the fly,you agreed to these terms,go anywhere you want, unlimited will be a thing of the past,even the carriers who say unlimited have caps,i doubt the grandfathering will protect you from the cap,why would they wait till October to enforce it,all you crying about it if you don't agree with it go else were.it is not a democracy,

True, but the speeds will greatly affect the home internet replacers and the 10 hour a day video streamers.

Like it or not i know *****ing about will not stop it,this is how corporations work,right now i would not say they are all tat fast to begin with,i hate to say it,but you get what you pay for,i am happy to pay 40 a month for 1200 minutes voice unlimited text and capped data,that equals to over 100 dollars on most post paid carriers.

Your "Unlimited" will likely not be grandfathered. This is VM Broadband2Go all over again.

Unlimited data will still be available. No where does VM state what speeds will apply your data, just that it will be unlimited. You will still have unlimited data, after the 2.5 gig soft cap it will just run slower. This will not affect the vast majority of users, just those who are constantly downloading large files, streaming movies, and trying to use a mobile data connection as home internet.

Actually they can and almost all carries do this, In the fine print of their terms of use it say that they have the right to alter the agreement without little or no notice, or that they can cancel it at anytime. Seeing that we are prepaid there is no agreement so they can make any changes they want.

In plain English it means this "It our network, we can change the pricing, how much data you get to use". It will still be unlimited but if you abuse it they are going to slow you down so by doing that you are still getting your unlimited data just a hell of a lot slower now. They never promised at what speed you will get that unlimited data just that you will be able to get it.

They don't even have to grandfather us in if they don't want to. Most companies do this as a courtesy to older customers. But I have a sneaking suspicion that in the future they may offer a new shiny phone and then tell us that if we want to use it, that we will have to "upgrade" our plan.

Just because it is in the fine print of the contract does not mean it is legal and binding. They gave the impression that you would have 3G speeds and could download unlimited amounts of data without a penalty. I'm sure there will be some sort of false advertising class action law suit that will come out of this. That is, if they don't grandfather in their current customers, which I am sure they will.
