Virgin Mobile Gingerbread!?

Because it's still not Gingerbread and definitely not regular Gingerbread.

You still have lots of hooks and plugins that are for CM there, some running, some not. You can't just turn it all off, you can't even interchange many of the stock GB files with CM files. I tried, many times.

The only way you will get an OV with GB is after VM releases it, and even then you will have to either use a rom, or buy a new OV. Do not expect an update.

in practical use, what in the IHO rom isnt stock GB?

I know the launcher most use is ADW but if that were swapped out with the real stock launcher, there would be no difference in USABILITY. it would look and act like gingerbread. until you went to "cyanogenmod settings" and started turning all that stuff on.

no one forces anyone to use that, and all it does is ADD to stock gingerbreads options. takes nothing away. a pure stock gingerbread from virgin mobile would do NOTHING but provide better hardware drivers to the IHO roms. improving the CM7 experience.

any CM7 user moving to a "stock" GB based rom would soon miss all the cm7 options they had AVAILABLE (not forced to use)

and anyone moving from froyo to stock gingerbread might feel more comfortable at first until they flash a CM7 rom and discover all it can do.

the phone is way better off with cm7. although a mass upgrade would benefit the optimus V userbase at large, virgin mobile already stated its not feasible OR planned.

a lot of low end phones dont get the great rom treatment we did. I think if you dont like cm7, thats your choice, you can stick with froyo and have a lesser phone experience until you upgrade to another phone, one which you will probably end up installing cm7 on anyways

Yes, internally it's not pure GB, but for an end-user, it behaves the same, most of the CM7 hooks are just if/else statements that skips over code paths if those features are not used.

Unless there is something in CM7 that behaves worse than stock GB (which I don't think there are any examples of), again what is the point of hoping for LG to release GB if the current CM7 is stable (except for the few minor feature/bugs remaining).

LG's GB will likely have many other bugs that CM7 has fixed since. Manufacturers likely spend more time putting out quality code on new hardware than updating an already-released device. Sprint's Optimus S GB code is pretty buggy from what I've heard.

Well I knew we wouldn't be getting an update, because that's just vm for yah, I was just curious as to whether this would lead to a more "stock" version of gb. I personally like a stock looking ROM and then I tweak the UI to my liking, that's why I run froyo not the cm7, because the cm7 has so many little add-ons and tweaks that make it feel "unofficial" like you said.

You can still restore it to the stock look and then tweak it to your liking, revert the latest Roboto font to DroidSans, turn off CM7 features, replace stock launcher over ADW. If you plan on tweaking it anyway, these should be pretty easy to do.

What's the point of "Official" other than just the word? As someone who works with software development everyday, I can tell you a lot of the CM7 developers & open-source contributors do a better job than Google engineers (who are often under time constraints and other obligations). CM7 & other developers work on it because they really enjoy doing it as a hobby. If Linux was only limited to being officially worked on by Linus Torvalds and a few others, we'd never have the quality product that it is today, CyanogenMod is like RedHat or Ubuntu to Linux.

I guess I shouldn't say official... because my froyo rom looks nothing like the stock since I change virtually all the .pngs in it. I suppose I just like the look of the froyo based ROMs better and that's just my choice... I should play around with the GB ROMs some more, because I know that they are good or else people wouldn't use them. I do love the animation on the cm7 when the screen shuts off, thats cool. But hey, what do noobs know anyway;)

google wouldnt have MADE a android 2.3 if it wasnt better or more functional than 2.2.

I still run froyo as my everyday ROM for right now, but there's even a froyo theme for CM7/IHO

VM released updates for the Intercept and Blackberry.

Decisions made early on between LG and VM created an issue with updates.

What do I miss with Froyo vs CM7? The top bar, that's it.
I use Launcher Pro, and use that for theming. I own SetCPu, so I don't lose overclocking with Froyo and I use Widget Locker on both. The only real difference for me between Harmonia and Harmonia 2, is that top bar and the updated market.

Honestly think about what on CM that you really use that isn't easy to replicate in Froyo, there isn't much. Sorry for all the CM7 fans, but I just don't get the hype. Is the phone better off with CM7? No. The phone is better off rooted and rom'd. Doesn't matter which so long as it overclocks and removes the VM apps.

CM7 is popular because it works on so many phones, it works so much better than stock (just as any good rom), people are lazy, and they can feel like a rebel using something other than stock. If it only worked on one model phone, it wouldn't have the hype it does.

And that extra stuff does take something away.
It uses clock cycles for all of that, and it's not easily removed either.

Yes, to the end user it's the same, that doesn't mean it is the same.
You are seeing only the front end, which can be changed to look however you want.

Internally it's different enough that you cannot swap out parts with the OS gingerbread and get it to work. If it was simply hooks being skipped over, it would work. It doesn't. The same happens when you try and swap parts for CM6 and Froyo.

If it was that easy, I would have already put out a completely stock GB for the OV. I have dozens of hours invested in that project and nothing more than a boot loop to show for it.

We don't have official drivers. While some drivers are good, others could probably be helped by an official release.

We also do not have an official MMS client. the one we have works, but is it 100% compatible? We don't know. A change by VM could break it.

Stable doesn't equal optimized.
Having a stock GB would give us something to at least compare to.

So basically, VM doesn't find it worthwhile to update the phones so they don't. I'm wondering, would there be any benefit to us if they did send an update, seeing as we are all on custom ROMs anyway?

An official stock GB would definitly be nice. I am still running harmonia myself as all the cm7 roms have bugs. I want stock drivers and stock kernel but it doesn't look like that is going to happen. I really don't care anymore anyway as my friend is upgrading to an iphone 4s and giving me his old iphone 4 so i will just run a tethered jailbreak on that and downgrade my optimus to the cheapest plan so i can just use that for tethering to my laptop since ATT has a 2GB cap and makes you pay more for tethering.
