I purchased my Bionic the first day it was available. The next day I had to return to my Verizon store because it had locked up. They identified the problem as the AVG antivirus program I had loaded. They said antivirus programs were unnecessary and caused problems, such as locking up. Has anybody else heard this? Admittedly, since I took that app off, it has not locked up again. It doesn't seem to make sense.

It would be helpful if you told us what anti virus program you were running. I have Lookout (the free version) on my Bionic and it doesn't lock up.

Anyway, Lookout is probably the most popular, and its never caused me any issues. Install the free version and you'll be fine. I've never tried AVG for Android, but you should def have some anti-virus on your phone.
From what I hear, Lookout is just fine, and you really don't NEED a virus protection app, but it's a GOOD IDEA to have one. I'd keep Lookout on there and just not worry about it, not as if the Bionic can't handle it anyways.
True, especially if you don't root, but I never assume people are safe online, so I always recommend anti-virus. Personally, I run it, but that's because I sometimes like to take risks and AV is important, just in case.
I just uninstalled it on my Bionic for that reason. I was having 40 to 50% battery left (extended battery) at midnight when I plugged back in, but today, my battery hit 15% around 5 PM after having installed Lookout this morning. I'll try it again after a few days of good battery life to see if my suspicion is correct. I don't really worry about viruses anyway. If your phone gets screwed up, you can always factory reset and be back up with a clean phone in 15 to 30 minutes.
You have a good point there. I installed it last night though and will see how it goes.

I use AVG and havent had any issues at all. AVG also uses little to no resources/battery life. It doesnt run in the background, all it does is check new apps you install/update for viruses, you can run a scan of files at any time as well. Its not a constantly running app though.
I got rid of avg to try out lookout and the battery life may have been a bit better with lookout actually
