Voice dialer doesn't work

My wife, daughter and I have a identical Galaxy Nexus phones with Verizon service, all bought at the same time. The voice dialer app on all three phones stopped working during the last month. When instructed to dial any number, the response is random and erroneous. It doesn't matter if it is a phone number or a name from our contact lists; the response is nonsense. The people at the Verizon store say they have not heard of this problem, yet the forums are full of folks reporting the same problem. The voice dialer app is totally worthless, and there is no value to a cell phone that can not be used hands-free. Has anyone seen a fix to this app?

I use voice dial daily with no issues.
I am using a custom ROM though, not sure if that makes a difference.

I just bought a Kyocera Hydro and Voice Dialer just randomly picks a contact - just totally useless from the get-go.
