Voice dialing may cause me to go back to iPhone

Or if plugged in, no 3rd party solution needed, just open up the Developer Options (google how to make access if not already, Android Central posted something too) and tick "Stay Awake". Only stops it from sleeping while plugged in.

If you're driving, check out some of the solutions for driving suites. Some of these might offer you the experience you're after. I think Vlingo for one has a driving mode where its listening for you.

Apple products are fine if you dont use technology. But if you had the interest to buy a Nexus 4, you know where you belong ;)

Thanks for the input. Yes, kind of got sick of being told what I had to use or not use. Can anyone say stuck with Apple maps unless you jailbreak (something I just didn't want to do).

Android phones are more customizable, but they rely on you to do some of the work. Where Apple may have the setting already created, with Android you need to Google "simple tasks with NFC tags" to figure it out yourself. That's part of the fun.

I should of know that would be the answer and I admit I was being lazy.

Hey mwunder, you might take a look at this particular BT headset by Jabra:

Amazon.com: Jabra BT3030 Bluetooth Stereo Headset: Cell Phones & Accessories

I have one that I bought second-hand from a company I used to work for. I love it and have used it with both cell phones and my MBP in Lion. I actually haven't tried using it yet with my N4, but I'm going to pull it out (I'd put it away when I'd sold my EVO and just now remembered where it is) and try it tonight, if it still has a charge. It's great because it works for both standard telco functions (mono audio + mic) and for multimedia purposes (stereo audio, and reasonably decent quality, too.

@benjdm

Good suggestion, but how do you prevent your screen from sleeping because when it does, button still doesn't work via wired headset? Enable DayDream mode and button press does "wake up" phone and then have to long press for voice dialing.

I think someone already answered this, but anyway. If you haven't already done so, you can enable developer options in settings by:

1. Go to Settings>About Phone. Scroll down to the build number (JDQ39 if you've updated to 4.2.2, for example.) Click on the build number seven times. ( If this doesn't make sense http://www.androidcentral.com/how-enable-developer-settings-android-42 has a video walkthrough.)
2. Now in settings above 'About phone' there will be 'Developer options.' In developer options there is a 'Stay awake' option for preventing the screen from sleeping while charging.

I use an NFC tag to set my phone up the way I want it in the car. It will read text messages out loud to me, for example. Between NFC task launcher and/or the Tasker app you can set up your phone to do some pretty neat stuff automatically.

I think there is an option for your phone to stay awake while charging. Also don't have your power button set to lock the phone.

Interestingly I thought your gripe was going to be that the phone doesn't confirm who it's calling or give you choices with voice prompt. Maybe all that's better on the N4 compared to the GNex, but that's my big gripe. Or maybe you haven't made it that far since the phone has always been locked.

Oh, I miss that very much. Prevents you from having to look at the screen to see what it is doing. However, I figured once I got the phone working the way I like with activating voice dialing it would be just a matter of finding an app that would provide a similar feature, if there is such an app.

I'm fairly certain you have to be rooted for Tasker. Do you have to be rooted for the NFC tags as well?

Ok, so I connected the Jabra BT3030 to my Nexus 4 tonight before heading to a karaoke pool hall with friends.

I ran it the whole night, talked over it and listened to music on it. When paired with the N4, it shows up as one device, and when you delve into the settings it shows controls for both telco and media. Everything works perfectly solidly on it.

Actually, and I hadn't mentioned this earlier, but since the unit comes with an 1/8" jack, you can hook it up to your car stereo's aux headphone input, and thereby have a hands-free whole-car-audio solution in one shot, if you were to feel like doing that. I actually have done that before with this unit, just as an experiment, and it worked reasonably well in that capacity.

I'm not rooted and I use both. There are a few features that aren't available if you're not rooted but both are plenty useful without root.

no because only a headset that has already been paired could do that. So the phone would have been unlocked when they were paired.

If you read what he wrote, he's using a wired headset. Errbody knows you can use a BT headset completly hands free since it's paired:p

He could even pick up a couple NFC tags to do it for him ;)
Ya I was thinkibg this too. Use an NFC in the car to toggle off the lock screen. May be doable. No root access necessary.

Could you point me in the right direction on how to do this?

One thing that is obvious...both platforms have their own set of issues. Some with simple work arounds and some not. Seems iOS is more limited on what it will let developers work around though. :-)

NFC Task Launcher

Follow the instructions when you launch the app and they will give you two free NFC pads, it also works with wi-fi and blue tooth. So once it connects to BT in your car you can set it up to do whatever you want.

VERY cool!

Do the instructions change? Because right now it is asking for something to be retweeted and I don't have a twitter account.

I'm not sure about not having a Twitter account. The Twitter thing is only if you want two free NFC tags, you can always buy them too. Although, it sounds like you'll be mostly using it with the BT feature anyway rather than the NFC.

Worse comes to worse, set up a Twitter account for only this purpose, takes two minutes.

Thanks...will check it out. Only car with that input is my Jeep Wrangler and there is too much road noise for using the phone in a speakerphone mode. I gave my BT speaker phone to my friend because it was useless in the Jeep. :-)

Thanks for all the input. I have to say that I think this is a useful topic for the N4 as I didn't find as much info presented here as in other post. The NFC tags sound VERY cool.

another option which definitely works when locked (maybe not with a passcode as I don't have one) is headphone remote control.

https://forums.androidcentral.com/e...=com.danez.headphonecontroller&token=7bw06iea

I know this works as I have just installed it and was trying to change the volume using my headphone control and google now came up!

NFC is amazing. One thing I would love a way around was getting it to work when the phone is locked. Not as secure of course but more convenient especially when you pull the phone out of your pocket in the car.

So works on your N4? Curious as a few reviewers said it didn't work. Guess I will have to try it out.

I know setting up the account sounds easy, but then I'd have to be able to use it. :p I'd buy them if I understood really what they do and thought I'd use them. This thread is the first I've heard of it.

I use the Tasker 'Say' action. Similar to this one:

http://tasker.wikidot.com/readsmswhileincardock

Edited to add:

That wasn't very clear... I'm using the Tasker app to do it. I set up a Tasker profile triggered by any incoming text. The profile checks to see the status of a variable which represents whether I'm in the car or not. If I am in the car it reads it out loud. If not then it doesn't.

Swiping the NFC tag in my car toggles the variable.

I prefer Bluetooth over wired. Can be 30 ft away when on a call. Background noise reduction is great. I have jawbone icon ans a Samsung. Icon has a voice command Samsung lets you know its connected by voice but uses beeps otherwise...that took time to get used to. But still a good headset. My first preference tho is jawbone. Use it more
