When my husband needs to listen to a voicemail the screen will go black for one second and the voicemail that he is listening stops. (This happens when he puts it near his ear and face.) Then the screen comes back on again. It does this every time. The only way he can listen to it is when he puts it on speaker phone mode. I tried everything I can think of. Tried uninstalling it and re downloading it. Also tried uninstalling the updates for it and putting it back to factory settings. I also tried going into the Display setting for the phone. I don't know what else to do. My husband also tried downloading a different voicemail app and it still did the same thing. Are we missing something? Is there some other setting we need to know about?

Had the same issue with my S7E and now I'm experiencing the same thing with my S8+. Thought it was just me haha. Can't figure it out either. Someone please help!

Ha! Just ran into this issue this morning. Came here to see if it was just me but apparently not!

Just to confirm.. you're using Visual voice mail?
No He's using the regular voicemail. He called Verizon today. She's claiming it's the sensor in the phone doing it. Yet I've heard from several people now that it's the App it self doing it or the software the Verizon puts in the phone. It seems this is happening to other phones as well. iPhones, Sony, LG, Galaxy phones...

I just doubled checked it. It's Basic Visual Calling. It's also happening with other voicemail apps. The rep told us that it's the sensor in the phone doing it.

I have the same issue with my S8. Message cuts off when placed to the ear to listen. I guess Verizon never tested voice messages? ("Can't hear me now")

Hello all... I may have the answer here. I initially thought it was a sensor issue, because it did the same thing to me every time I started a message and went to put the phone against my ear. However, upon further testing I've discovered that it isn't a sensor issue at all. I payed closer attention to what was happening each time I put my phone to my ear while playing back a voice message, and I noticed that either my face or my ear was triggering the notification shade, which in turn stopped the message playback. With this in mind, I went to listen to another message and decided to slowly creep the phone toward my ear until the sensor was triggered and the screen went off. The message kept playing every time I did it this way. So, I believe it's not the sensor, all that are having this issue seem to be accidentally triggering the notification shade because no matter how slight of a trigger, it will stop playback immediately. Hope this helped!

Other thread mentioned to turn off favorite cards on Samsung Pay settings and it actually works

This issue has been bugging me since I got my S8+. Turning off favorite cards in Samsung Pay did the trick. Thank you THEPRFCT10.

That worked!! I still have mine on for screen off only and the visual voicemail app still works. But that's the only way favorite cards seems to work with visual voicemail. Just it

No visual voice mail for me. But I found turning off the lock screen and screen off cards playing a voice mail and then turning them back on solved the issue. Now I know if it happens again I can just toggle them quickly. Thanks much!!!

Not sure if there was a patch but this doesnt seem to work for me. I have a galaxy s8+ and did exactly as described.

Scratch that, just tested - I had to completely disable samsung favorite card. Not sure why but for me I had to turn off each settings for Samsung Pay - Favorite Card.
Lock Screen : Off
Home Screen : Off
Screen Off : Off
Now I can listen to voicemails.
Attempted enabling just Screen Off - voicemails will not play.
Attempted enabling just Home Screen - voicemails will not play.

I am leaning towards it being a Samsung issue since it has to do with the favorite cards app. With I knew more about Android OS and whether it had some sort of event viewer to see if we could find the two conflicting.

I have an s8plus and the same thing happens. There are no cards on my Samsung pay. Don't even think I set it up.
This started when that PITA Bixby showed up.
I wish I could uninstall it-so annoying.

Samsung Pay is not the problem. I have uninstalled it and voicemail playback still pauses after 2 or 3 seconds every time.

Tried disabling SmartLock, too. No help.
