Voice Quality Issue

That sucks man :\
I don't make many calls but so far no one has told me I sound muffled or like I'm in a cave or anything. Everyone said I sounded fine. If it means anything, the "noise supression" I left at the default setting of "Normal". I believe there's 3 settings, "High", "Normal", and "Low" maybe.

I wish you guys weren't going through this :\

I find it very hard to believe that the call quality issue is due to a SIM card? Over the last few years I've switched between numerous phones, iPhones, Inspire 4G, Nexus One, Captivate, Blackberry, and many more. Not once while using the same SIM card did any call quality issues come up while switching between phones. I truly believe it may be an issue with the mic. I too have heard several people tell me that I sound muffled as if I'm holding something over the mic and talking through it. It is ridiculous for some people to be going through their 3rd of 4th Atrix trying to find a good one out of the bunch and tells me that Motorola as before has fallen short of quality control. I've had several Motorola phones in the past and never was truly a big fan of the company and stayed away for a few years until I heard the features and hype on the Atrix. This phone is truly fast and a very good phone but looks as if I'm going to return mine and go back to the Inspire.

My first SIM (which came with the first phone) looks like jonneh's; my current one looks like sublime's. With a new handset I'm still told I sound muffled. This is no longer acceptable; I'm returning this phone and checking out other options.

You guys are worrying me. Think I better do more thorough testing to see exactly how it sounds. I guess I'll give my phone to a friend downstairs and call it from my house phone to see what it sounds like.

The funny thing is that I guess it depends on where you are and how strong of a signal you get. I've heard both from my gf and my buddy (both who use iPhone 4) that the calls sound muffled and they can hear themselves (echoes). And then at times they say they can hear me just fine. I even switched phones with the gf and I didn't experience any of the issues that they have been talking about. So I think I'm just gonna exchange it for the Inspire once again as I have never experienced anything like this in HTC phones.

..Yeah, I gave my phone to my sister, went downstairs and called it from my house phone. I had a 7-8 minute convo with her but I couldn't tell anything was wrong. At times she sounded kind of muffled maybe, but she was sort of mumbling too, so I don't know...I guess it's a toss-up. I will just keep it.

Ugh someone just complained to me and said they could understand me but it was muffled. :( This explains why some other people were repeatedly asking if I was there on the line... Must be because it sounded like I was about to cut off. hmmm... what to do...

I'm in michigan as well. I'm on my 4th atrix right now (lol) trying to get one that sounds perfect. Lately, call quality seems ok, but still lacking at times. People haven't been complaining. Today somebody actually asked me if I had fixed my phone, because I sounded back to normal. I think part of this might just be learning how to hold the phone. FWIW, I have noise suppression off.

One thing that hasn't gone away is a distortion at the VERY beginning of calls. Like a first ring. Always sounds buzzy/muffly.

Calls quality for now is probably a 7 out of 10 and I'm going to live with it and hope for a fix.

Same here

I had the same issue on my Atrix as well. I sent it back to the store. Looking for a different phone now.

Mine has been fine so far, made few calls and no one complain about the quality. *knock on wood*

When I bought mine, the AT&T rep setup a new SIM card without even asking me...He mentioned it's for "future" compatibility since I'm getting a "4G" phone.

Edit: The reception has been great generally at where I am, even in my office.

My voice sounded muffled to a certain extent on my calls. I just turned off the noise cancellation. The earphone (or whatever you call it), is awesome. My N1 sounds like a tin can compared to it.

My reception is great too. It's as good as my old BB 9700, and BB always have great reception.

I still have a big problem with the slight earpiece vibration that "I" hear. I was on a long call and said hold on, switched my SIM over to my old Nokia and called the person back. They immediately said I sounded better, I didn't even tell them why I had to call them back either. I was actually trying to compare the sound in my earpiece on my side of the call. My old Nokia was better. I'm bummed out. The Atrix is so cool, but this is a game changer.

A website has been set up for Atrix victims of the muffled voice issue:

http://www.fixtheatrix.com

Please post your thoughts there...

The latest update has said to fix this. I havent noticed any issues with the voice quality and have been on the phone making and recieveing calls for hours since I got the latest firmware. It actually seems more clear now.

No offense, but you're the guy who said, from the beginning, that your Atrix had no voice issues. In fact, your comments tried to minimize the truly widespread nature of this issue, like some kind of Motorola shill. So, it seems to me that you are not in a position to comment.

It's early in the update rollout, but I've yet to see a post, apart from yours just now, which indicates that the update did anything for the muffled voice issue. Over on the Moto corporate forum, the muffled voice thread is now more than 400 posts long, and not one post has been made regarding the results of the update with respect to the muffled voice defect.

It's early on. Let's see the results from the folks who ACTUALLY HAVE this problem.
