Huawei Mate 20 Pro, Android v. 10.

Am able to record a message, and listen to playback on the device.

When I phone the cellphone number, the phone lights up and rings 5 times, then shuts down.

The phone I'm dialing from rings about 9 times, then a busy signal.

Any ideas?

Just a couple of questions.

You say that you are unable to record a message and play it back from the device, what type of message are you trying to record? The greeting, a message to yourself, something else?

Then you say that when you dial the number the phone lights up and rings 5 times then shuts down. Do you mean the phone is restarting, the screen goes blank/dark or something else?

You go on to say that the phone you're dialing from rings 9 times then gives a busy signal. So are you calling from a separate device trying to leave yourself a VM? Are you doing this because friends, family or others have complained that they are unable to leave you a message or are you trying to access your VM to make changes from another device?

Typically one would expect to get a message of some kind if VM fails. This mailbox hasn't been set-up and therefore cannot accept messages, the mailbox you are trying to reach is full or something along those lines vs just hanging up on callers. This may also be dependent on your carrier or the service you are using for VM of not your carrier, but just to confirm you are not getting any message, correct?

What happens if you call from the device? Are there any messages saved or not deleted when you call? Have you checked your VM settings to see if you can adjust the ring count? For example, If I don't answer by 5 rings I typically can't answer so my VM should pick-up after 5 rings. For some it may be more or it may be less but the number of rings can usually be set by calling VM from the device and going through the settings or by going online through your carrier account. If push comes to shove and your talking about a carrier based service, customer no service, I mean, customer service, should be able to make these changes for you. Most carriers customer service is reached by calling *611 which is where I'm going to direct you. If there is no good reason for VM to not be working, mailbox full, mailbox not set-up, there may be something they need to do to get it working. I know I've had issues like this when dealing with Verizon where they had to go in and reboot or restart my VM service. Nothing you've described seems to be tied to the actual phone and it doesn't control VM the carrier or service does. The phone mostly acts a connection and verification tool.

Thank you VidJunky and B. Ditty for your help. I'll answer in order.

First, my carrier is Public Mobile.

" what type of message are you trying to record?"
The usual message when unable to get to the phone in time. "Thanks for calling, please leave phone number..."

"Then you say that when you dial the number the phone lights up and rings 5 times then shuts down..."
When I dial the cell phone, the screen lights up (awakens), and it rings about 5 times, then shuts down. Does not cast the voicemail message.

"You go on to say that the phone you're dialing from rings 9 times then gives a busy signal. So are you calling from a separate device trying to leave yourself a VM? Are you doing this because friends, family or others have complained that they are unable to leave you a message."
Yes. I'm testing to see if I am able to hear the message (and I can't), and if I can leave a message. That's a NO.

"but just to confirm you are not getting any message, correct?"
CORRECT. When phoning the cellphone from another phone, it rings about 9 time and then a busy signal.

"What happens if you call from the device? Are there any messages saved or not deleted when you call?"
The when dialing the the cellphone from the cellphone, or pressing and holding #1, The Message says there are no messages.

I cannot find where the set the number of rings.

When I dial the cell number on the cellphone, I get a message that say, "6UT1 This number is not in service."

When I dial, *611 I get Public Mobile assistance. Press 1 for this, 2 for that, etc.

"the actual phone and it doesn't control VM the carrier or service does. The phone mostly acts a connection and verification tool."
Interesting. I didn't know that. I'll go to PM's Community page.

I appreciate your help.

No problem.

From your answers though it sounds like the VM box hasn't been set up and therefore just drops calls that aren't answered. It is odd that they only allow 5 rings before deciding that the phone isn't going to be answered. I've had my device in my pocket and not realized it was ringing for longer than that. LOL.

It is also odd too that if it considers your VM not to be set up that there is no outgoing message telling callers something, but this is likely something some carriers do and some do not.

Let us know when you find the answer. It may help someone else.

Best wishes.

Can you tell us how you're trying to access your voicemail? Are you long-pressing the 1 key on your dialer pad?

Open your Phone app, then tap Menu>Settings>Call Settings, and look for the Voicemail option. Find the Voicemail Setup menu, and see what's listed as your Voicemail Number. On Public Mobile, I think it's your own cell number that you call to access your voicemail.
