Voicemail on Project Fi/ Nexus 6P

Is voice mail handled through Hangouts App or is it integrated into the Fi carrier service? previously i had sprint and set my voice mail to ge through google voice.. when i ever i received voicemails it would send me a notifcation with the voicemail transcribed in text and i could also listen to it.

It's through Google Voice from what I can tell.

This, it is part of the phone app. There are four icons at the top, a star icon for your favorites, a clock looking icon for call history, an icon of two silhouettes for your contacts, and an icon like a tape which shows your voicemail.

If you use the sms/hangouts integration you'll also get the voicemail in hangouts with it transcribed and the ability to listen to is from there.
