VOIP SIP calling issues?

Hi,

I've just migrated from my iPhone 3GS to the Atrix. So far, I'm pretty happy, although I'm not impressed with battery life, but on another forum I heard it gets better... we'll see...

One thing that I'm not thrilled about is the Atrix's ability to field SIP calls. We use OnSIP at work and I have an asterisk pbx at home. I can't get sipdroid to make a coherent call with either one. And that's even at home, over WiFi, on the same LAN as my asterisk pbx! The calls are very choppy and it sounds like you're underwater!

I've tried various codecs, but I don't think it's that. Has anyone else had any success with SIP calling? Is it the codec? Is it the setup? I even tried another SIP client; is there something better than sipdroid?

Thanks for any info/advice/experiences!

Could be the codec. Or it could be the available bandwidth. Could be the config. Especially if it's not establishing correctly when it hits the border(could be dropping packets). What type of signaling protocol is it using to go out?

I agree. I thought there was an issue with mine and returned it. I have tried 5 Atrix's now with the same result. This phone can not do sip traffic. I have tested with wifi in 3 different locations. Compared Cisco Wireless sip phone right next to the Atrix connected to the same device and provider and the Atrix does not work. Same test with a Droid X and it was flawless. Even tried basic Skype call and quality was the worse I have ever heard. Other than this issue which I hope can be solved; love the phone.

Hello manwithastick,

I would like to slightly oppose on what you said. Maybe because of poor wifi signals or maybe because your internet connection is slow, the call quality hence suffers. I have the same phone & VoIP works just fine, there?s no compromise on voice quality or SIP trafficking. I think the problem you are facing is mainly due to poor connection speed. If you try this with a faster internet speed, you shall certainly experience problem free VoIP calls.

I've tried most of the SIP clients on Android and I have found the one that works the best for me is Linphone. I connect to my provider that uses Asterix on there backend and it workes without a hitch as long has I have a good data connection 3g/wifi.
