Wait. What? Verizon EDGE surprise

Yeah, the 5s would have to be turned in or else you get hit with a $200 fee. I just checked into this and even called Verizon to double check. The phone that is currently being used on the line that now has Edge has to be returned within 14 days or the fee applies.

Doesn't seem to be a good deal to me - I guess if you really want a new phone and don't have an upgrade it's the way to go.

Normally yes, but it isn't required during open enrollment when you first sign up for edge.

At least that was what was offered to me. Ask the rep clearly and document. If Verizon charges then you can call and they will credit you.

If they insist on returning a device, put a junk basic phone on the line and turn it in.

No trade in is required to start edge. If you are on edge then you will either have to trade in or payoff the device.

Verizon recently increased from $20 to $25 line access discount for edge over 10gb

I see, so perhaps the OP just started Verizon Edge on a new line. That makes a lot more sense. I also considered this, but since I don't use 10 GB+ of data it was more cost effective for me to just add a line with the two year pricing. I used the 30% code and with the $100 bill credit the phone will only cost me $40 in the end. I think for the OP's situation if they indeed added a new line with Edge the numbers will work out to be favorable. I think Edge being favorable depends a lot on individual situations and data usage.

If you're on a 10GB plan or higher and don't do Edge, you're an *****. Seriously.

At the end of the 2 years you have to return the phone them, and if it incurred any damage you have to pay the difference. You also are still paying subsidy costs that are rolled into your bill, even though the phone is no longer subsidized. There's a huge amount of info on these plans on Google. Can't link it currently, but check it out before your 14 days are up. Edge has been mathed to cost nearly double buying a phone outright plus monthly bill unless you upgrade every 6mos-1 year. And they still get you on subsidies.

I did the same and even got my wife's phone done under the Edge as well. In my opinion, it makes sense. Its a heated subject on this forum. I do not think you got the deal of the century but I think it was a fair deal especially, if you take the discount on your line. Even if you were to pay the subsidized price of close to 400 after taxes and activation fee, the $30 per month for the Edge program would take you about 14 months to break even on the $400 and that does not take into account the $25 deduction you get so, the $400 investment would take you 80 months to recoup it.

When I upgraded my wife's phone, I was told that you can now upgrade the phone after 30 days under the Edge as, long as you pay off half the phone. So conceivably, you could have the IPhone for a month, then a Droid and then a windows phone or whatever.

from what i understand, as long as you're not giving the phone back to them, it's really no different from buying it outright aside from the bill credit (plus) it's just a 0% interest loan on the retail price, which if you bought it outright, you'd still be paying whatever subsidies are incorporated into your bill anyways.

it's like the argument that buying on contract makes no sense because proponents of outright purchases vs 2 yr contracts always factor in the price of data on contract into the "price" of the subsidized phone, as if the outright purchase buyer doesn't need to buy data.

now if you give the phone back to them, most of the time you are going to lose on that deal, but (as least with next) you don't have to give it back, just pay off the balance on the line whenever you're ready for a new phone

I think their is an Edge plan for customers not under contract and a "Early Edge" where customers under a contract that haven't upgraded since 11/13/13 can upgrade into the program but they must return their current phone.

What is Early Edge Open Enrollment?

Early Edge Open Enrollment is a limited-time option to participate in the Verizon Edge program. You can get your choice of the latest smartphone sooner than you would under a traditional 2-yr contract.

If you?ve had your current phone since 11/13/13, you may be eligible to purchase a 4G LTE smartphone through the Verizon Edge program. You?ll pay for your phone in monthly payments.

To be eligible for Early Edge, you must meet all the following:

Be eligible for Verizon Edge
Have had your phone since 11/13/13 or longer
Return your phone in good working condition*

The Early Edge Open Enrollment option will be available 2/13/14 - 4/30/14.

Note: You must return the phone that was on your line at the time you placed your Verizon Edge order, and it must be returned to Verizon Wireless within 14 days of receiving your new phone. If you do not, you may be charged a non-return fee of up to $200.

Its not a crappy deal if you're available for an upgrade because your contract date is not extended you now just owe them for the balance of the phone.... Edge is nothing more than zero interest financing

Also it's worth noting it would be kind of silly to pay off the full balance of the phone... Because with the payment plan it would take approximately two years therefore you would have stayed with Verizon for 2 years and paid$600 for phone when you could have paid $200 for the phone if you were going to stay the full two years and not get another phone..

it is great for a person like the OP and I because I constantly want a new phone I will never pay off a full phone I will always trade my phone in at the halfway mark which usually is 300 dollars

When I asked about edge, they explicitly told me that I didn't have to turn in the phone. I didn't do it as it isn't worth it for me even though I use more than 10gb. So long as you ask the rep, if they say no turn in required, then just document and buy. If they charge, call and complain and they will remove the charge

Verizon knocks 25 off the plan for phone on edge... Only for 10 GB or higher plans (it knock off is lower for plans under 10 GB ).

This is a killer deal honestly.

Let me be clear. I didn't have to turn in my phone. There was no mention of my phone at all. For me this was a great deal because I pay nothing for the One at all. Even if I have to pay $200 it's still a good deal because that is the price of a subsidized One and I'm not eligible for the discount.

I could easily sell my iPhone for over $600 so I come out way ahead.

On an edge plan, you will need to pay equipment for 20 months, you really need to show your bills for next month before we can grab the situation.

You did not turn the iPhone, do you know if they converted that into an installment too? If so, they will charge you that, and 25 discount would simply vanish.

The math can be done, after we have a bill.

@T-Mobile GN3

You actually only have to pay 12 months, because then you can trade it in and the other half is forgiven and then you can grab a new phone and do it all over again. Plus if you are on 8GB or less you get $10 off and $25 off if you are on a 10gb or more.

Sorry, but not everyone is comfortable with using eBay/paypal/swappa. So for those who aren't, it's really not all that bad. Verizon is pretty much throwing money at you on the 10gb plan.

These are pretty much the numbers I ran when I made my decision, entirely agree with your analysis. If you are 10+ GB of data already the Edge program is a big winner. If you need substantially less data then you are not getting as good of a deal.

You DO NOT have to turn in your phone if you are out of contract. You only have to turn in your phone if you're still under contract since they will terminate your current contract.

Edge is a program you can start when you are out of contract and is not required to turn your phone in.

EARLY Edge is a program that allows you to do the program when you're not actually eligible to do it, but you have to turn in your device and then they will terminate the contract terms.

Also, there's a loophole where you could really turn in ANY phone, for EX: if you have a 5s and you are required to turn it in to do early edge, you could go home activate another working phone on that line, Then turn that in.

BOOM

I'm telling you - I did not have to turn in my phone. I'm under contract too. If I do have to turn in something, you better believe I'm hitting Craigslist for a used Verizon phone. :)

It sounds like you are thinking about the Edge program before Share Everything was modified into More Everything. With the discount on service that Edge customers get, the "subsidy double-dip" argument shouldn't exist for Edge customers on the 10GB data plan.

I just read through all the documents I got when I bought the phone. There's not a single mention of needing to trade my current device in. There is mention of having to trade in if I want to use EDGE UP, but nothing about my device when signing up. I'm pretty sure it's as good a deal as I thought. Sweet.

You're fine. Don't worry. If it isn't in the documentation then they can by charge you. If they do then it is an easy call for them to remove it
