Wait. What? Verizon EDGE surprise

I thought about putting my old storm 2 or thunderbolt or my old rezound back on the line so I could keep my M7 that I got on 8-22-13 only 7 month's ago to get my M8 on early edge. I gave them my M7 and they gave 1$ credit for for storm 2.

Needless to say I got extra closet space now and have a thunderbolt and rezound to act as iPods for the kids, now I have the mindset to let go of the old device because you never go back to a older phone u always find a way to get the next best thing. It sounds Like a loophole by putting a older device on line but I bet they want the one I had for 7 months on a 2 year contract.

From the one M8

I wouldn't be surprised if the clerk messed up and you get billed the full price for the iPhone on your next bill.

I would. Considering that they didn't put it on my receipt they will have a hard time justifying anything like that.

Edge is really simple, and the amount of nonsense being thrown around about it is ridiculous.

Let's say you're eligible to upgrade. You've had your phone for two years and now it's your natural time to upgrade. Let's say you're on the 10GB More Everything plan. You walk in. You pick your phone. You pay the first installment and sales tax upfront. After that, you have a monthly installment on the phone. If you get a $600 full retail device, your installments are $24.99. On the 10GB More Everything plan, you receive a $25 discount on your bill for doing a phone on Edge. So, your line access looks like this: $40 line access, substract $25 Edge incentive, add $24.99 device installment.

Now, the phone you took out on Edge is guaranteed to be worth half of full retail price, or $300, at any given moment, so long as it is in good working condition. So let's say in 10 months you want to upgrade. You trade in your phone for $300, and you've paid $250 in installments. That means you have to pay the remaining $50 and bam, you can upgrade. All the while your monthly bill has been the same as it would have been if you paid full retail or did the phone on a 2 year contract.

Now let's say you do a Moto X on Edge. That phone's installments are $16.66 per month. So you have a $40 line access, minus the $25 Edge incentive, plus a $16.66 device installment. At that point Verizon is paying you to do a phone on Edge.

Please tell me how that's a bad deal.

EDIT: If it's your normal time to upgrade, or if you have a line that's eligible to upgrade and do an upgrade transfer. YOU DO NOT HAVE TO TURN IN YOUR CURRENT DEVICE. From what it sounds like to me, OP used an upgrade transfer to initiate Edge, at which point his line still has it's contract from getting a subsidy on his 5S, and the line whose upgrade he used will be billed the installments, but he will still receive the $25 credit for taking Edge on a line.

I did not. None of the 5 lines on my account were eligible for an upgrade. There was no mention of trading in my phone. There is nothing about trading in my phone on any of the documents I got from them or have in my Verizon account. Nothing at all.

That is what leads me to think they might charge for the iPhone because you didn't turn it in. I would read the original contract for the line with the iPhone and see if that doesn't have a cancellation clause which would supersede any new paperwork you have signed for EDGE. Because you could be found in breach of that contract.

I don't say this to point fun but to make sure you cover your own arse. Just because they may of messed up doesn't release you from your original contract. It is legally your responsibility to follow the contract.

I will check with a fine toothed comb. But I'm not out of contract and I haven't broken it. I just called and they said that "your line has been upgraded to the More Everything plan at no charge". That was the automated message verbatim.

I'm not turning my iPhone in. For all they know it was broken before I did the program.

No, you don't have to return the phone, because at 2 years it is paid for.

When my grandmother got it they informed us that she had to as it was more like lease. This was a few months ago before any revisions.

The the rep screwed up and it's on them. You got away with murder and trust me you did. I work in a retail corporate store and unless you're out of contract, The phone must be handed in.

Oh hell no. I know better than that. Reading back, I can see how you'd misunderstand what I said. I should have said, "I walked out with my new One and iPhone 5s and only paid $70" :)

I think that EDGE is a crappy deal for people who are eligible for an upgrade, but for me it seems like it was a great deal. I pay net zero for the phone when I just got a subsidized iPhone just 3 months ago. I could sell my iPhone and pay for my service for 6 months.

If you didn't turn in your existing phone, you will be charged $200 on your next bill. I went in and got the new One on Edge today too. You have to turn in your existing phone in order to get the phone on Edge. If you don't you be charged a $200 penalty on your next bill. I had to trade in my DNA and pay $80 down to get on Edge. They did waive the $35 activation fee. Now I have to pay $25 per month for the phone. Once I've paid 50% of the retail price of the phone I can trade it in for a new phone for nothing, continuing to pay the $25 a month for the phone. Its better than paying $200 up front and having to wait 2 years to upgrade.

Awful deal if you need to turn in your phone to get Early Edge.

AT&T has been doing early NEXT for those currently in contract WITHOUt turning in a current phone. My actual contract ends in October, but I can get a new phone on Next today WITHOUt turning in my year old Optimus g.

At the end of the 2 years you have to return the phone them, and if it incurred any damage you have to pay the difference.

You only return the phone if you trade it in before the two years is up. If you finish the two years the phone is yours to keep. The hook for these plans is the ability to trade it in if you want to upgrade more often than every two years. I don't get where you think they are getting some kind of double subsidy. They give you a bill credit every month your paying the phone payment so where is the subsidy at all? It's kind of understandable that they would want you to return the phone if you do and early upgrade. On Edge they are selling you a phone full price on a no interest payment plan. They give you a line discount to offset the fact that you are not getting a $600 phone for $249. If you want to get a new phone earlier they need to get the old phone back to make up the difference. Apparently it's wrong for companies to make a profit on business now? You are basically agreeing to pay full price for a phone like the rest of the world in exchange for a significant discount on the price of your line. They're not collecting that money upfront but spreading it out over two years. If you don't finish the payments you should have to return it. The original Edge Plan WAS a ripoff. You got to pay full price and there where no line discounts. I think it would be foolish to do and early upgrade past a certain point also and turning it in. If the sell value is greater than what it would cost to pay the Edge contact off you should pay the contact off when getting a new device and sell the old one yourself. I think this would be most apparent in the last 6 months. The sweet spot for trading up seems to be the 1 yr mark. It's doubtful for most phones that you would get 1/2 the unsubsidized value selling it and that's the point you can trade up without incurring a penalty. Seems like a win to me.

exactly. just verizon shafting their customers yet again i guess.

the "lease" bit they told someone's grandmother is a flat out lie as well.

So the worst case scenario I have seen is that I'd have to pay $200 for not turning in my iPhone. How exactly does this make it a bad deal? That would mean I'm just paying the upgrade price when I'm not eligible for the discount! They're not getting my iPhone so that's off the table.

I fail to see how this is a bad deal for someone like me who is not able to get the upgrade price.

I just got official confirmation of the monthly discount. And again no mention of needing to return my phone or pay $200. The only mention of paying or trading in anything has been in this thread.

Honestly, even if they did charge you $200 just call customer service and get it waived. No one ever mentioned to you about it at store. So right now is avast deal, same one at&t people are getting.

OK ... very interesting discussion. I am considering doing this too. I've got 6 months left on my contract iphone 5 but am sorely tempted by the new One. Please check my math for me for 3 options:

Standard subsidized price when contract is over in 6 months
$200 down [maybe less by then] + ($40 per month for smartphone x 24 months) + $35 activation fee = $1,195

Early adoption of Edge plan (I would activate a very old V710 before doing this and gladly turn it in. But would it have to be a smartphone to qualify? Or would it absolutely have to be my iphone 5 to fulfill the contract?)
$0 down + ($30 per month for smartphone including $10 discount x 24 months) + ($25 per month for new HTC One x 24 months) = $1,320

Buy HTC One at full retail
$600 for phone + ($40 per month for smartphone x 24 months) + $35 activation fee = $1,595

SO, since I do not have a 10GB plan, my discount is only $10 per month, so the difference in cost is $125 over the two year period, but I get the new phone 6 months earlier.

Now, when the two years is up, I own the phone free and clear and I can quit the Edge program if I want to right? Or of course, I would be eligible to upgrade much sooner when the device is 50% paid off.

All that sound right?

Except that you would not be under contract after the first 6 months after buying the HTC ONE outright so you've got many other options.

Or you could pay the ETF (about $75 at point in your contract) and be free and clear. This is one thing I don't understand with upgrade discounts etc. Why would anyone pay the full price of a phone this late into a term? They know this and will probably offer you an early upgrade so your math would be different.

True on both counts.

I asked today about my ETF and they told me it was $180, which seems a little high considering I am 75% of the way through my contract. I was expecting something more like $75-100 myself. So I should theoretically be able to pay the ETF to terminate the contract then be free to upgrade. Will that cause trouble with keeping my existing phone number? I've had it for nearly 20 years and that is critically important to me.
