Walk me through a factory reset please.

My s4 is so laggy now since 4.3 so I'm thinking about doing a factory reset. I am however, worried about losing everything on my phone. Can someone walk this noob through the backup sms restoration process? Do you guys think it will even help?

Have you tried just wiping the system cache partition first? This won't erase any personal data or settings. Reset: Samsung Galaxy S 4 | T-Mobile Support
