Wallpaper selection madness

I am going out of my mind. I have searched google and android central forums but I haven't found a reference to this issue, although I can't be the only one I'm sure.

I'm using the evo 3D with ADW launcher. I can't figure out why sometimes when I go to pick a wallpaper that is sized for qHD, it allows me to select the whole picture. Other times I can only select a box and the picture looks crappy. Why am I getting different behavior at different times? Any help really appreciated before I go out of my mind.

Have you tried to touch the edge of the box to drag it open? Should let you make the box larger
