Warning: Big Troubles with Samsung Galaxy S5, Lollipop, and Verizon

Rip the band-aid off, do a factory reset, it will fix the issues.

This did it for me. I couldn't get a half a day of use after the update and I also had all kinds of issues and lags. Now my phone is fast and battery life seems better than before. I had about 5 hours screen on time today.

Only had about 12% battery left after a full days use when I plugged it in though.

Verizon really screwed up Lollipop with something that they added.

In a nutshell - If you have a Verizon Samsung Galaxy S5, DO NOT upgrade to LOLLIPOP. It compromised my email (can’t send email, pinch zoom doesn’t work, terrible lags), rendered wifi unusable, made the phone run so hot that the battery drains down in 4-5 hours with minimal use, eliminated all notifications before the unlock screen, and lags so long that my phone often timed out before I had time to enter my unlock key, forcing me to get rid of my lock screen, so my phone currently has no security.

The proposed solution of a full factory reset did not work for many who tried. It simply erased all user data and customization. And who should have to do a factory reset to make an update work, anyway?

This is affecting many people on the Verizon network. Everyone has the same issues, and Verizon refuses to take ownership of the problem. They keep asking people if their phones have been exposed to water.

I worked with Samsung via twitter and got my phone to the point where it is usable, but without security, and it no longer seamlessly switches between wifi and network. In addition, my email continues to be compromised, and lags continue, so I often have to reboot my device.

There is a long post on Verizon's forum that addresses these issues, but I am unable to link it here because I am a new member. It is called: Samsung Galaxy S5 Lollipop Update Problems

Don't upgrade to Lollipop on Verizon. It's garbage and will render your phone virtually unusable.

Sorry to hear your troubles. But coming on here and telling people to not upgrade is just plain silly.

My phone is not unusable at all. Perhaps you were dissatisfied with your S5 from the start. This phone still rocks on LP.

Nothing that LP brought would make me think twice about switching back to KK.

LP has actually made my S5 faster.... sure it still has lag, and the battery life is not fantastic, but it is definitely an upgrade to the overall experience.

The S5 is, IMO, still the top Android phone at this point on VZW. The Droid Turbo has no MicroSD, no removable Battery, and varying results on that big camera. The good shots I see are OK, but I think the S5 takes, on an overall standpoint, much better pictures from what I have seen in the forums.

Just silly to say to the forum folks to not upgrade when you had a bad experience. This phone is still a beast even with a girly OS called Lollipop. Been good to me.

Until the S6 drops, the S5 is the one. It has the form factor, software, and camera that simply cannot be beat. Don't like the band-aid back? Put a dang case on it for the love of Pete.

I just think a different opinion than "don't upgrade to Lollipop" needs to be posted. Thanks.

I got my GS5 in May of last year. I constantly used it and installed and uninstalled countless apps along the way. When it came time to install Lollipop, I did the upgrade and immediately noticed it was running hot and had poor battery life. After trying the cache wipe and letting it settle for a couple of days, I bit the bullet and did a factory reset on it. Boy, am I glad I did that. It runs fantastic now. I also took the time to install only the apps that I actually use and not reinstall everything that was there just because it was there. I'm convinced that there are apps that don't play nice with Lollipop. However, that is not the fault of Google, Verizon, or Samsung.

If you are concerned about game save data, then you can install Helium and back up you game progress, and then restore it when you reinstall the game. I would recommend against restoring anything but game data based on my past root experience.

Based on my long history with computers in general, a fresh wipe is always something that is helpful to performance because of bad programming techniques that leave crap behind even when they are uninstalled.

Quite the contrary, I love my S5. Still do ,even with all the troubles. I continue to blame Verizon, and I am thrilled to hear that your phone is okay. You are fortunate indeed.

That said, I would amend my original post to, "If you have a Verizon Samsung Galaxy S5, DO NOT upgrade to LOLLIPOP until they have all the bugs worked out." I wouldn't wish my miserable experience (about 4 worth days before it really started improving) on anybody.

My S5 had the same issue after updating to Lollipop. When I ran Waze, Star Wars Commander, or Clash of Clans - the phone would heat up and drain the battery, even after quitting all apps.

Seeing as how I live in the cloud anyways, I just backed up and restored - all problems are gone and overall performance has vastly improved.

I know you said you're trying to avoid resetting it, but if you live in the cloud already, it's not that bad. There are even apps available for backing up customized settings and such.

Good luck-

I'm with WereIAm. I too love my S5. Just not my S5 on Lollipop (older reference for those of us here over 30). I too blame VZW and Google for the issues. I believe the LG had similar issues with 5.00 that were not corrected until 5.01. I tried a factory reset with Lollipop and still encounter major issues. I am just glad I was able to revert to 4.4.

I also have an S5 with Verizon and after working with Samsung on Twitter most things are working again, but not as smoothly as before the lollipop update. The phone is better mainly because I bit the bullet and did the factory reset after going through all of the other troubleshooting 2-3 times.

However, WiFi is just as bad as it was before on kitkat. My phone still heats up. It's better than it was right after the update, but worse than it was before the update. I'm still getting random app crashes; not 3rd party apps, but built in apps like contacts. The auto brightness sucks now because with it on the screen is way too dim.

Worst of all is that the battery is still not as good as before. Right after the update I would only get 4-5 hours max with little usage. I'm talking around 30 minutes screen on time with maybe 2-3 text messages, 15 or 20 minutes of random usage like Facebook or search and a couple of calls, that's it. Now I'm getting about 80% of the battery life I got before the update. It's an improvement, but also a significant hit to battery life.

I had all of these troubles with my vzw s3 and I hope that if the updates comes to my s5 I do not have the same issues with it.

Verizon s5 here, runs perfect for me. Get about 10 hours of usage!

WareIAm - So, I'm too new here to post links (thought I was an old timer on the Moto forums here, but maybe that doesn't matter), but I can direct you to the page I found (there are many) that seemed the most correct:

Google this: How-to: Samsung Galaxy S5: Clearing the Cache Partition and Rebooting in Safe Mode

So, on my phone a week or so after clearing the partition cache:
- still lots of spontaneous reboots. I look down and see the brilliant red Verizon splash screen, and wonder how many times it reboots when I'm not looking.
- occasionally, the phone seems to get warm-to-hot
- UI lags on occasion, which is easily the most irritating part to deal with

I love Android. I am definitely all in when it comes to Google and their cloud apps. I am Gmail, Gcal, Drive centric. Problem is when there are issues, and it's not clear what is going on. Then you have three giant companies and not a lot of direct help (Is it a Google issue? VZW? Samsung?) In particular, when you have a very specific technical scenario that you need information on or a resolution to, Google's official (and unofficial) forums sound like crickets just when you need them most. VZW's low signal to noise ratio in the forums makes filtering a chore. Samsung, well, I really only approach Samsung from the Android forums approach, like Android Central.

In this case, it seems it's really more about VZW testing and customer-facing directions and support. But who truly knows?

I am really looking forward to 5.0.1, and I hope it comes very quickly.

Finally, a small hijack:
Can anyone tell me if the S5, running LP, will be able to fully support external SD cards? I was really disappointed to find out that KK caused the issues that it did with external SD cards, and that Samsung apparently has a long history of corrupting SD cards. I came from the Moto world where SD cards and pre-KK worked well together. When I moved to the S5, and KK, I didn't originally bring my SD card over. I understand the Google rationale on not having a wild, wild west scenario with the file system, but what a rough transition! I've heard the LP makes ext SD useable again (fully, but in the proper way), but still not happy about my S5 turning my ext SD card into a corrupt mess. No reason to just reformat and use it with the S5 because there is no guarantee it won't happen again. But.... I've heard LP and Samsung might play nicer with ext SD cards. Anyone?

Voice search stopped working, it just doesn't connect with Internet. Anyone else?

Did you try removing and then re-adding your Google account? Sometimes that helps. Or try reinstalling Google search.

Just go roll back to Kit kat. Instructions are posted in another thread. It's not hard at all.

It has only been about 12 hours since doing my post LP update factory reset and I already see a huge improvement.
Been rearranging icons, resetting up apps, just general set up stuff for over an hour.
Phone is running much cooler. Battery life much improved. Most importantly, it is back to being quick without the lag.

Guess I should have stopped my whining and did the reset long ago, lol

This update is terrible. Anyone have any idea how to put the music controls back on the lock screen? I can't seem to figure it out. And if you can't do it, why would they remove it. Now when im in my car i have to unlock the phone every time i want to change a song.

I am still getting a pop up saying contacts has stopped working.
Battery life, not a good as I first thought, defiantly worse that pre LP.
But, the speed is back. No more lag.

If you don't want to go back to 4, do the factory reset if you are having issues.

Try diabling S health, it seems to have fixed these problems for me.

I have a verizon S5, but I am using it on T-mobile so I had to update my phone using Odin with the update from Sammobile.com. Anyways after I did it I experienced every problem listed on this forum, did the factory data reset and wiped cache but nothing resolved the problems. Worst problem was the battery life, it was almost as if my battery was not working anymore. I read somewhere that people were noticing the heart rate monitor was activating on its own, and the fix was to take a heart rate reading once, even that didn't make a difference, however I realized that it could be part of the problem. I rebooted into safe mode and the difference was amazing, battery life seemed to be at least 10 times better. But I didn't want to keep my phone in safe mode so I tried disabling S Health hoping that the heart rate monitor problem was an indicator. It seems to have worked and I am getting at least the same performance out of my phone as before the update. I also disabled most of the other bloatware Verizon puts on there just to save memory, but I think S health is the big culprit here. Please let me know if that works for you guys.
