Washed out display

I love my new nexus 7 but the display seems washed out is this normal?

Not sure what you mean. I do know that the color isn't as "vibrant" as it is on my GS3. But I don't have a problem with it.

I have it on 80% but I notice it the most when its turning on that x just looks awful, maybe I'm spoiled from the great screen the gnex has

I believe the Nexus 7 has an IPS screen and your GS3 has AMOLED. That would probably explain it. IPS screens have more "true to life" colors, but AMOLED screens appear much more saturated and the blacks are much darker on them especially. Being used to an AMOLED screen could definitely make a regular IPS screen look sort of "washed out" by comparison.
