Water Resistance

It's not:

IP64 Protected against spray up to 60° from vertical.
IP65 Protected against water spray from all directions.
IP66 Protection against low pressure water jets (all directions)

I wouldn't bring it in the shower.

This is my first water resistance phone. How safe is it to just bring the phone into the shower with me?

Just know that water damage is not covered by Samsung warranty nor will it qualify for a manufacturer defects. These phones are not water proof. It is meant to spare the device from an accidental drop in water. It's not meant for you to shower with it.

IP68 does not imply any protection against heat, chemicals (chlorine, soap, etc), sediment, motion (jets, current, etc) or steam. Swimming is a terrible idea. Shower? Not great, make sure the shower isn't actually spraying water on the device because the pressure can break the seals. IP68 should be viewed as a "oh crap, I dropped my phone in a puddle, ok cool it still works" sort of protection. It doesn't mean the phone is going to do well if it's intentionally submerged or exposed to conditions that aren't part of that rating. Finally, one of the most dangerous things to do with an IP68 device is to actually use it while wet.

The test is this: device is powered off or put into sleep (display off), water is room temperature, motionless and free of chemicals, device is placed in the water for 30 minutes, then device is then retrieved, then dried off, then it is powered on. If the device still works for basic tasks, it is considered to have passed the test.

That test doesn't sound anything like any bath or shower or pool I've ever heard of. There are no room temperature, motionless, chemical free showers, as an example :P

I think that's backwards. If the phone drops into water, the impact with the water can exceed the IP68 rating. If it's gently intentionally submerged, it's within bounds.

What's your source of information for the claim that the device is powered off for the test? I don't see anything in the IP68 definition that precludes operating the device while it's immersed.

Something to keep in mind with water resistance, immersion is simply that(phone takes a dunk in some water with no force exerted against the device), subjecting the phone to water exposure where there is water with force exerted against the device may have a different result. Granted a shower will exert force but should not be enough to harm the phone (A trip to the Jacuzzi would be a bad idea) I just wanted to mention this so people are aware of the difference. (I have worked with allot of equipment with different levels of water resistance).

Cheers,
BR

What about sweat like after the gym?

I haven't had it happen with this phone yet, but my Note 7 got dropped in a pool twice. (I like to read and float) No issues. My S7 fell into a toilet and no issue. I've answered calls in the shower so far without any problems. It hasn't hit water, but knowing me it will happen.

I can think of two things about showers that the IP68 rating might or might not cover: high temperature, and pressure of the nozzle jets. I would research those parameters before taking a chance.

Take a look on YouTube. They shot a G6 with power washer hoses. A jet from a shower hose won't do a thing. There's a rating system for a reason. If it can withstand full submersion for 30 minutes (which its been proven it can exceed drastically) no one should be worried of there phone gets caught in the rain. It's pretty silly. What's happening is we're so used to be terrified of our devices being near water that the simple thought of dunking it into a pool makes you sick. Water resistance will be a standard in a few years, don't be afraid of it! Lol

Water resistance or not I will never ever intentionally dunk my $1000 phone in any kind of water for any reason. The water resistance is there as a precaution, but I sure as hell will not be testing that out

Again... It's being accustomed to a fear you no longer need to have. There's no "testing". Whether or not you "test" it, it's rated IP68 and is in fact water resistant.

And in the event it fails and I don't randomly have 1200 dollars to buy out my contract. I'm stuck with no phone and have to make payments for a phone I don't have.

I'd like like a waterproof case or if keep using zip lock bags

I agree. To me the warranty show how confident Samsung is in the waterproof rating. If you take the phone in the shower, pool, beach, etc... and water gets in the phone your warranty is void.

very true. they will try to say it was used in a manner that is outside the warranty.

Used my phone underwater. No issues. They could be sued for false advertising if phones we're getting damaged. They're not stupid, they know by stating the water resistance level that the consumers will try it out. I certainly did. Completely submerged while playing a video lol

Well, I posted in another thread about my tempered glass protecting my phone when it flew off a table and face planted on the concrete under a full venti sized Starbucks PSL (my wife's). I just got home and washed my phone in the sink with a sponge rinsing all the coffee off that was trapped in the case and I did get the water drop about moisture in the charging port. Got out the blow dryer and blew it out with the heat off. All is fine.

They do specify the rating and what's covered by warranty and what isn't. Using the device under water has nothing to do with the certification and so any damages from doing so would be owned entirely by the consumer or their insurance policy.
