This is my first water resistance phone. How safe is it to just bring the phone into the shower with me?
I think that's backwards. If the phone drops into water, the impact with the water can exceed the IP68 rating. If it's gently intentionally submerged, it's within bounds.IP68 should be viewed as a "oh crap, I dropped my phone in a puddle, ok cool it still works" sort of protection. It doesn't mean the phone is going to do well if it's intentionally submerged
What's your source of information for the claim that the device is powered off for the test? I don't see anything in the IP68 definition that precludes operating the device while it's immersed. The test is this: device is powered off or put into sleep (display off), water is room temperature, motionless and free of chemicals, device is placed in the water for 30 minutes, then device is then retrieved, then dried off, then it is powered on. If the device still works for basic tasks, it is considered to have passed the test.
What about sweat like after the gym?IP68 does not imply any protection against heat, chemicals (chlorine, soap, etc), sediment, motion (jets, current, etc) or steam. Swimming is a terrible idea. Shower? Not great, make sure the shower isn't actually spraying water on the device because the pressure can break the seals. IP68 should be viewed as a "oh crap, I dropped my phone in a puddle, ok cool it still works" sort of protection. It doesn't mean the phone is going to do well if it's intentionally submerged or exposed to conditions that aren't part of that rating. Finally, one of the most dangerous things to do with an IP68 device is to actually use it while wet.

That test doesn't sound anything like any bath or shower or pool I've ever heard of. There are no room temperature, motionless, chemical free showers, as an example![]()
I can think of two things about showers that the IP68 rating might or might not cover: high temperature, and pressure of the nozzle jets. I would research those parameters before taking a chance.
And in the event it fails and I don't randomly have 1200 dollars to buy out my contract. I'm stuck with no phone and have to make payments for a phone I don't have.Again... It's being accustomed to a fear you no longer need to have. There's no "testing". Whether or not you "test" it, it's rated IP68 and is in fact water resistant.
I agree. To me the warranty show how confident Samsung is in the waterproof rating. If you take the phone in the shower, pool, beach, etc... and water gets in the phone your warranty is void. And in the event it fails and I don't randomly have 1200 dollars to buy out my contract. I'd like like a waterproof case or if keep using zip lock bags
very true. they will try to say it was used in a manner that is outside the warranty.I agree. To me the warranty show how confident Samsung is in the waterproof rating. If you take the phone in the shower, pool, beach, etc... and water gets in the phone your warranty is void.
They do specify the rating and what's covered by warranty and what isn't. Using the device under water has nothing to do with the certification and so any damages from doing so would be owned entirely by the consumer or their insurance policy.Used my phone underwater. No issues. They could be sued for false advertising if phones we're getting damaged. They're not stupid, they know by stating the water resistance level that the consumers will try it out. I certainly did. Completely submerged while playing a video lol
Water resistance or not I will never ever intentionally dunk my $1000 phone in any kind of water for any reason. The water resistance is there as a precaution, but I sure as hell will not be testing that out
