Way too much data usage with YouTube

So for the past 3 days I have been using data instead of wifi to watch YouTube (30 minutes average a night) as my wireless has issues, and today I noticed I have used 1.5 gigs! With my old phone I never used over 800mbs and that only happened when out of town for 2 weeks with no wifi. So my question is, is there a setting to cap the quality of you tube videos while watching on data or is it using data to update my subscriptions while not on wifi.

Welcome to Android Central! Open YouTube, hit Menu, then Settings, then General. Make sure "High quality on mobile" is unchecked. Streaming HQ is going to use up more data than low resolution.

Also make sure you have a solid (-90dbm or higher [lower negative number]) signal. A weak signal means a lot of resends, and every packet resent is more data used. If you get any stutter or buffering, that will increase your data usage.
