Web Developer transitioning into Android Development

Hello!

Name is Thomas. Basic run down of me is I'm a jack of many trades and master of few. I've spent the better half of my short 26 years on this planet doing a variety of web development and graphic design starting out long ago with HTML 4.0 then transitioning into XHTML and CSS. Eventually picked up a bit of JavaScript but it's lack of types messed with my logic back then so I decided to pick up some other languages like ANSI C and Perl. Last year I started learning Java and that transitioned into a temporary obsession with Ruby for a while.

I recently picked up developing an Android app with a friend and this whole new world of development has brought me here! I'm quickly picking up much of what I need to know and am excited to be writing code that isn't so "academic" for lack of a better term. With this newly found passion comes many questions that are left unanswered, for now. So, I'm going to right away get the complete n00b question out of the way and ask, what are the little circles you can click on and highlight in Android Studio? They're next to the line numbers, you click the space there and a colored circle shows up. I've never worked in an IDE for any extensive amount of time, I've always used the likes of vim and Notepad++ when on Windows, so I'm wondering what the purpose of these are.

Anyways, if you read all that, thanks! I look forward to interacting with the community here and hope to contribute where I can.

Hello Thomas and welcome! 🙋

I have read it all but it's over my head. However, there are plenty more heads here. :)

Welcome to Android Central! Sorry, I'm not proficient with app building, but hopefully someone who knows can point you in the right direction.

Welcome. If the circles are red, it sounds like you're referring to breakpoints for debugging. If they're tiny green circles, they are bookmarks used for toggling to different locations in code with the F11 key, or F3 on a Mac.

Awesome to have you...

Heh... "learn to code for Android" has been on my personal to-do list for a while... Ug... I need to clone myself.

Hello Thomas! Welcome to the AC Forums! Hope to hear more about your Android work! :) I'm not code-savvy so don't know what those circles are, but the post about breakpoints might be on to something...

It depends upon what IDE you are using. While running the program via ide if you find the line back color changing to yellowish where you have the circle then it is meant to be debug break points where you can see the variable's values or even run some extra debugging code via attached console.

Anybody knowing most lightweight IDE for android please post here. I tried eclipse but the VM part simply takes too much time and I get fed up during that period.
