Well, at least I'm not the only one. There has got to be something causing it though
It think it is just the animation they use for locking the screen. Honestly, I wouldn't worry about it.

It's by design. It's not a defect. It's been present in every Samsung phone since the S6.
Then why does my s6, s7 edge, two note 7's and s8+ not do it? Most of the people on here have said it's not normal and theirs doesn't do it
This doesn't seem to be a defect. I have a Verizon Note 8 and mine does it. I just assumed it was part of the lock animation. I never thought it was a defect. It totally looks intentional to me. I am not worried about it at all.
This looks like a software thing, not a hardware issue. If there was an inherent hardware defect, I would think you would see color disappear at other times during normal use. And I seem to remember other devices that I've owned that did this type of transition when turning off or going into a sleep mode.
And to be honest, you have to really be looking for it on my phone. It happens so fast. Like literally the image is colorless for a fraction of a second before the screen goes black. I'm sometimes not even sure I am seeing it.

I'm on Verizon too, and I occasionally see what you describe as well. But I think I have a bigger problem. I can be doing anything on my phone (i.e., texting, writing an email, playing a game of euchre, etc.) and the screen will start to "blink out" on me. By that, I mean that the entire screen will start to get smaller and dimmer, then immediately pop back to normal. It happens in the blink of an eye. Then it won't happen again for awhile. I've also seen it do this even while the phone is just sitting on my desk showing the home screen with no interaction by me. It'll be just sitting there. I can't find a way to MAKE it happen either.
That's different. That one is definitely a defect.
It can't be intentional if the majority of phones don't have the issue
This is a normal sequence like, before the screen shuts down the RGB generator is powered off then the monochrome
I think it's happens so fast that sometimes you may not see it but it's always happening to avoid damage to the screenIt can't be intentional if the majority of phones don't have the issue

I see it every time on my note 8, I have 2 s6's, an s7 edge, and s8+ right here with me and I can't recreate it with any of them.
