Weird display issue. Is this normal?

It's by design. It's not a defect. It's been present in every Samsung phone since the S6.

Then why does my s6, s7 edge, two note 7's and s8+ not do it? Most of the people on here have said it's not normal and theirs doesn't do it

Yeah. Same here. My s6 edge plus, note 5 2 note7 and note8 doesn't do it.

This doesn't seem to be a defect. I have a Verizon Note 8 and mine does it. I just assumed it was part of the lock animation. I never thought it was a defect. It totally looks intentional to me. I am not worried about it at all.

It can't be intentional if the majority of phones don't have the issue

This looks like a software thing, not a hardware issue. If there was an inherent hardware defect, I would think you would see color disappear at other times during normal use. And I seem to remember other devices that I've owned that did this type of transition when turning off or going into a sleep mode.

And to be honest, you have to really be looking for it on my phone. It happens so fast. Like literally the image is colorless for a fraction of a second before the screen goes black. I'm sometimes not even sure I am seeing it.

It may be a combination of hardware and software. This monochrome animation started on the S8+ after an update in July. It could be an intentional animation or just an artifact of the amoled panel power down firmware. When a manufacture makes a batch of amoled panels there is always a slight variation is some the specs like color balance and response time among units in the batch. The monochrome animation is VERY short and maybe some of panels with slower response time are not getting to the animation before power down and therefore not showing it.

I definitely wasn't looking for it and it was noticeable enough that it only took me a few hours with the phone till it really started sticking out to me. Now I'm totally obsessing over it lol.

I'm on Verizon too, and I occasionally see what you describe as well. But I think I have a bigger problem. I can be doing anything on my phone (i.e., texting, writing an email, playing a game of euchre, etc.) and the screen will start to "blink out" on me. By that, I mean that the entire screen will start to get smaller and dimmer, then immediately pop back to normal. It happens in the blink of an eye. Then it won't happen again for awhile. I've also seen it do this even while the phone is just sitting on my desk showing the home screen with no interaction by me. It'll be just sitting there. I can't find a way to MAKE it happen either.

It's an intentional animation, like the old CRT wink off. All recent Samsungs do it, but it happens so quickly that it's easy to miss. It is a variant (much faster) version of the screen off animation Google introduced in Lollipop.

That's different. That one is definitely a defect.

Agreed, but with it being as intermittent as it is, it'll be almost impossible to demonstrate the issue if I go to Best Buy where I bought it and try to get them to agree to exchange it. I'm hoping that, within the next few days, it'll start happening more often.

I think it's happens so fast that sometimes you may not see it but it's always happening to avoid damage to the screen

I see it every time on my note 8, I have 2 s6's, an s7 edge, and s8+ right here with me and I can't recreate it with any of them.
