I live in an area that never had any 4g coverage, wimax or lte. This morning I check my phone and it says "4g" instead of 3g. I ran a speed test and it came out 9140kbps for down, best I can remember for non-wifi.

I'm not complaining, mind you, just curious. I'm also nowhere near an lte roll-out area, but I can't imagine they'd be installing new wimax anything. How can I tell if this is wimax or lte?

Thanks

As Sprint rolls out LTE around the country, you may start to see it appear randomly in locations where it hasn't officially rolled out. It may come and go, and one day you may get good performance, then next it'll be worse than 3G.

"How can I tell if this is wimax or lte?"

It is certainly LTE, for wimax is not supported on the GS3. One must be patient, however it is much easier said than done!

Even though I am in a 4G city, I continually check Coverage Maps | Sensorly for updates pertaining to the surrounding area.. It's user generated information, not the slop that the carriers try to feed us..

Check this. The actual Sprint website won't show as they start working on an area. If you LTE you area is getting LTE but will just take awhile to become the norm.

Sensorly, though, only recognizes that a 4G connection exists. It doesn't know anything about how it performs. There's a shopping center near my house where I get 4G (not officially turned on here), but I've seen download speeds as low as 130 Kbps.

It's a premature network. It will get better and better.

Same here in OKC, occasionally get a 4G at Will Rogers Airport

My thing is that I've been getting lte like speeds on 3g...least I did for two days. It was very strange but awesome

As LTE grows over the next couple of years, they will eventually swap out WiMax for LTE, also, because as WiMax phones are phased out by upgrades to be replaced by LTE, they will need that bandwidth one day.

But you won't get WiMax on an S3, anyway. If you haz 4G, you haz LTE. ;)
