Ok, I use nexus 4, and I have noticed that my phone is splitting sms at 70 characters, and we all knew that it should do that on 160. Tried to fix the problem. Downloaded handcent app, stll same problem.
And then the weird thing, I noticed that as long as I write sms normally, there are 160 characters, and as soon as I either press predicted word or use swipe, counter goes on 70. I use SwiftKey paid version.
Evem worse, I went to stock keyboard app, and sms stayes on 160 character split no mater if I swipe, type or use predicted words...
What to do? Is this SwiftKey related issue, or?

Seems this is a SwiftKey problem cause language spec characters do this. As čćđ and so on... WTF SWIFTKEY!!!???

Hmm, I think I may have noticed this on my Galaxy too. Texts that didn't seem all that long were split to 3 messages. Never bothered counting characters but I will next time I see it, since I can't seem to reproduce the problem at will. Also using SwiftKey.

Could it be that it just says 2 messages, or are you certain that it actually sends them as 2 messages and the recipient receives them as such?

I am having the same issue! It's a 70 character count on any keyboard. I downloaded the jelly bean keyboard so that i can have autocorrect but it has the same problem. I have looked thru every setting to try to change it to no avail. This is a really huge issue because I text people that do not have unlimited texts.

Its sending both messages

I know it's sending both, but does the network send them as 2 separate messages, or is it just cosmetic (ie, the phone shows it as 2 messages, but the network sends them as 1 message since it's under the actual sms characters limit)? If your network has a usage tracker for texts you can check before/after. I'd do it myself, but I actually haven't noticed this problem for a long time.

Ok, so the double open quotation sign (?) takes up almost 100 characters. Happens with both stock sms app and go sms pro, happens with SwiftKey, Swype, and jellybean keyboard. Can't find that key on the stock samsung keyboard. Maybe this happens with other keys as well.

Discovered by accident when my sms was split into 3, I copied and pasted to a new message, started deleting each character, and when I deleted ?, I lost a big chunk. The issue may be different for other people. Try typing ? in sms. My character count drops from 160 left to 69 left.

Unfortunately wasn't able to test whether the network treats the text as 3 texts because I wasn't home. But now that I can replicate the issue, I will try at home.
