Hi everyone! I'm new here on these forums, but not new to android. I came from Blackberry to the HTC Hero, which I thought was the worse phone I ever owned save for the fact that there were thousands of free apps, and back to Blackberry. Now I am back to android, and a new owner of the Samsung Epic 4g. Hopefully it won't let me down like the Hero did with all the bugs, and laggy keyboard problems it had.

Hello...new to the forums and andriod

hello everyone...i'm coming from blackberry (my old and faithful) to the world of android. i just bought the samsung epic and when i mean just bought i'm talking like a week ago lol. this is first android phone ever since they were introduced. i've always been a blackberry person with a minor stray to the iphone (when they were first released and upon leaving germany...i was military) and motorola razr/kazr family when i was in germany. other than that its been berry all the way...pearl, curve 8330, tour, and bold. don't get me wrong i love bb but i've been wanting to try android for some time now. i've been wanting something new and different and android is different...not complicated just different. i got so used to the UI of bb and had all my apps. however, i've noticed that all my favorite apps that i bought on bb app world and other bb app selling sites are either free or waaayyyy cheaper on android. the only app that i can't find that i used plenty on my blackberry is smrtguard (smrtguard rep said it is only compatible with android 2.2 so when the epic is updated then i'll be able to get my app back) and ascendo ijuggle. really liked that app. anyways i just wanted to say hi to everyone and if anyone has a samsung epic and knows all the tips and tricks to it share and share alike lol

Hi. I've had my Epic for several months now. I've thought about rooting for a while and I think I may finally be ready to do so. I'm tired of having issues with my GPS and I'd like to be able to use the wireless tether. I do have a couple questions first, though, before I start.

See, I'd like to be able to save the data already on my phone. I've got numerous contacts and media files on there plus several paid aps from the store. Will I be able to use these if I root my phone? Is there a way to be able to get tethering and a fixed GPS and still keep the programs if I can't keep them when rooting?

From what I've read here and at the XDA forums it sounds like the Epic is pretty resilient when it comes to "bricking." It sounds like even if you screw a whole bunch of stuff up you can still get it back to factory settings with relative ease. Is this true for all ROMs or are some more unstable and likely to cause actual bricking than others? A had a friend who was running Cyanogen, but he's also a software developer and knows this stuff like the back of his hand. I'm a chemist. I know molecules. I've got a basic understanding of computer stuff, but when it comes to command line stuff I'm mostly clueless.

Finally, and this is probably mostly stupid, but I've come to really love the "swype" functionality of the Epic. Do any of the ROMs offer this or will I have to get a swype knock-off from the market?

I've just ordered a new USB cable for my phone from monoprice that should be here later this week and once that arrives I think I'll be ready to start trying stuff. I look forward to your help since I'm nearly 100% certain I'll need it.

Hola! I'm not quite an Epic user yet, but I will be once my phone is delivered 2morrow!!!! I've been a BlackBerry user for 4 years. I've grown a bit tired of BlackBerry and wanted to try something new. I fell in love with a friends Android, and I had to get one. I'm sure I will be on here a lot with a ton of questions.

Hello!

The Epic is my first Android phone but I have had it since Sept/Oct. I love the bright screen and a keyboard is a must for me since I text a lot.
I just joined recently to learn more about rooting, etc because I may not want to wait for 2.2 to be officially released.

Oh and I did come from BB and life is so much better now with the Epic.

Pre to Epic...

Dee here and recently got the Epic (1st Android); LOVE IT!!!! Just a bit disappointed in the wallpaper/background deal. Other than that... I should've made the switch sooner and left the hesitation behind!

Hello all. I've had my Epic since the beginning of Dec. It was an upgrade from the piece of crap Moment (worse phone ever, I had 7 of them). Looking forward to all the phone things this phone can do.

Hi everyone!!! I just got my Epic and also it's my first Android phone. Was a gunghoe Pre WebOS fanatic until they announced no more OTA updates to the older Pres and Sprint was hemming and hawing about whether they would have an upgrade path or not. So here I am and WOW!, wish I had bought one of these earlier. Looking forward to exploring the Android environment and joining in on the discussions.

Just dropped my Pre for my First Android. I pick it up today. I just hope I made the right choice!!!

Welcome to all the recent new Epic visitors. Feel free to look around, ask questions and check out all the different sections available not just here in the Epic 4g section but also around the general topics and other areas.

Pre to Epic

Looks like there are a few Pre to Epic folks around here! I've been a long-time Palm user (my first device was an IBM Workpad. First phone a Treo 300) but turned in my Pre for the Epic. I've already learned quite a lot by browsing around these parts, including how to restart a hung-up device back out-of-the-box condition. My wife got one as well so we're a two Epic family!

I also just upgraded from a Pre (minus) just a couple days ago after finally getting fed up with waiting on HP updates. I was a Pre "power user" and really thought I'd miss webos.
But, as it sounds like many of you have found out, I've found I was SO misinformed as the Epic is so much more powerful and usable than my Pre -- and without even needing to root! And the better apps --wow. I sure wish I had made the switch sooner.

Hello Epic Users

Neil here been reading post for the Froyo release so just a quick note. Been a blackberry user 8350i from Nextel and decided to make the jump over to the sprint network. So big change in the speed and functionality of these phones. Got the Epic end of January.

Just joined the forum a few days ago and have been in lurk mode until now. I'm a Pre/webOS refugee who got tired of waiting for landscaped email, voice-activated dialing, bar-code scanning. You know, all the usual stuff.

I do miss the Pre's touchstone, but other than that, I'm glad I made the switch.
