I'm very interested in Android TV, but not so much in the Nexus Player. The reason why, and this seems to be something people are overlooking, is that it's a Nexus.
People are making a big deal over what's missing, but let's take a look at the device.
It has low storage. How many Nexus devices have a lot of storage?
No external storage ie microsd slot. That's par for the course for a Nexus.
No HDMI pass-through or ethernet port. Is that surprising when you think of a Nexus?
I think this device will be what all other Nexus devices will be. A no frills demo of what the OS can do. It's low priced and will get quick updates.
I think Google will leave it to their partners to produce devices that have more of the options that we are looking for. That's when I'll look to make a purchase. Give me an LG player, I'll pass on the Nexus.

Agreed, but with a little tinkering/adding on you can overcome most of your points and end up with TV/HTPC center for a very little cost. All on pure android with a huge ecosystem to leverage.

If you want all your check list items you will have them shortly, as many vendors will fill the gap, for a price.

That's the beauty of a Nexus - it's very tinker friendly. I'm just not much of a tinkerer anymore. But yeah, it's a great option for those who are.

@Phil

At 7:46 in your 'Nexus Player walkthrough' on YouTube, you sign out of one account, and then are presented with a list of accounts on re-signing in. I only have two accounts, but I find no way to associate more than one at a time in the Nexus Player... i.e., I have to remove the currently registered account from the device entirely in order to enter another.

How'd you do dat?

Thanks,

-CM
