Went to Best Buy to buy a Nexus 5 on Sprint and was told

When I called the Elite whatever customer service (bought a couple of TVs last year) they said that they don't consider Google a matchable retailer. She said I might find someone that will price match it, but it would be hit or miss. Either way, I have only ever found an unlocked N5 online with BB.

You really can't take what some kid at Best Buy said very seriously. They have absolutely no idea about anything when it comes to phones. They told me the same thing about the whole BlackBerry line on Sprint a year ago. The salesperson (looked like a 12 year old boy) told me that the new BlackBerry M10 (which has never existed) was dropped because Sprint doesn't carry BlackBerry anymore. They are total neanderthals when it comes to phones. All you can do is laugh and shop elsewhere.

You definitely have to be educated and know what you want no matter where you shop for a phone. It really tests my patients when you hear the same regurgitated sales pitch even though you state specifically what you want...

First and foremost the only fact about sales people is they lie. Never believe a word coming out of someone mouth if they are selling something.

And if you're a customer - Whoah! - that's when you get the really big smile. Customer always gets that really big smile, as the salesmen carefully positions himself directly behind the customer, and unzips his pants, and proceeds to service...the...account. I am servicing this account. This customer needs service. - George Carlin (May 12, 1937 – June 22, 2008)

Give Best Buy a call and ask for a stock check on the Nexus 5. You should be given another employee to do the check and confirm if one is available for you to purchase. Also, if they do have one for purchase ask to price match the Play Store and with luck, you will get it at the same price as Google Play.

If it's truly discontinued then there may be a number of reasons why - some good ones provided above. I would not take it as a sign that Google is going to abandon the device and no longer support it.

Best Buy is not supposed to price match Mobile ever. I have heard a story or two about people getting away with it, but it is a company wide rule to not price match for mobile.

It's not a lie at all... It's been deleted and discontinued in our system.
No accessory support for it, we lost money by price-matching the Play Store, and it was supposed to be for Sprint, but there were more people buying it for use on other carriers.

Didn't bother me... I openly advised people buy it, as its unlocked. And I price matched. But it's easy to understand why BBY discontinued it.

We rarely had more than 3 in stock at any given time, anyway.

"Bestbuy"

That's all I needed to see to know the answer and I hadn't even read the question yet.

Your case sounds like miss-communication vs deception. I will leave it at that since there are enough references to the business on this thread already :)

I got a N5 about 1 month ago (via Google Play) and couldn't be happier, it's a very nice piece of hardware, with a great price.

Being in Canada the carrier issues are similar, Charging $530 ($50 upfront plus 2 years @ $20 monthly) for the 16GB, and I got the 32GB from Google for $400. No brainer. I walked into Telus and had a working phone in about 5 minutes. Going to any reseller would have been of no benefit to me. This included transferring my number from existing competitor.

Hindsight, I would do the exact same thing over again. Same phone, same way to purchase, same way to activate.

If you want the N5, go get it :)

Who buys a Nexus 5 from best buy any way? But seriously I always tell friends and family that are going to shop at best buy to not believe their knowledge of tech. Their employees are hired for sales experience, not tech experience. Same goes with carrier stores.
