Before you start to crucify me, let me explain. I'm not dissapointed with pixel or pixel xl, but with Google for pulling the same crap they did with the 6p. I just retired from a very successful supermarket chain in the northeast after 47 years of management positions. Our success was due mostly on 3 things. 1-great customer service, 2-have your advertised items IN STOCK, and 3 great pricing. So you see where this is going? Googles new pixel was going to be successful. We knew that. Forget great pricing, we knew that too but were still willing to spend our money on it. They should have had tons of them available AT LAUNCH. Under no circumstances, should I place an order and be given a ship date over a month away. Retailers (verizon, best buy etc.), should also not already be OOS. Hell, im probably not going to wait a month. I'll wait for the S8. Like our philosophy at store level, never allow your customers to go to the competition, THEY MIGHT STAY THERE. Nice going Google.

Sad but true. Google never has enough in stock nor do they restock quickly

Re: What a letdown

I understand the demand probably superceded the supply, but I completely agree it's messed up. I posted my issue on this matter elsewhere, having to wait over a month from release date for shipment even though I ordered only a few hours after it went on sale. But I'm definitely not waiting for another phone. The Pixel XL is what I want and I'll just have to wait unfortunately.

Re: What a letdown

I don't know. My friend just waited for about a month for an iPhone 7+ that cost the same as my xl. For the past 2 years. Google replaced my Nexus 6 and 5x for free. They paid for shipping. And when I decided to return the 5x and get a 6p they also paid for that shipping. Plus a Google case that I used for over a week that I didn't like. They also paid for shipping for that. That pretty good customer service for me. I'm not saying Google is at no fault. But the unsatisfied customers are always the loudest. I'm also a manager at a major retail bank (not Wells Fargo, haha) often times I never hear back from someone I gave great service to, but if me or my staff done something wrong, I'll definitely hear it. I think out of every unsatisfied customers, there are probably 100 more that's very satisfied.

Re: What a letdown

there is a reason you see giant line ups at Apple stores on launch day.
No supplier is immune.

Re: What a letdown

Well, they could've rushed production to get more units ready. Maybe took some shortcuts on QC. It's not like that's ever backfired on anyone...

When I bought my galaxy note 2, note 4, s6 edge, S7 edge and lg v10, I got it within 2 days. They, especially the S7 edge were incredibly popular phones too. There really is no excuse.

I ran a grocery store so I know what's best for a multi billion dollar multinational corporation.

Re: What a letdown

I see this as yet another evolution in the gotta have it now phenomenon. Its a phone not groceries #firstworldproblems.

And HTC had issues rolling out their 10's if I recall. There seemed to be no rhyme or reason to distribution. Those (like me) that ordered it late in the preorder system got it before people that ordered it 12:00:01 on preorder launch day. *shrug*

With HTC it was something River distribution that seemed to be the issue in the distribution problem. Maybe Google has the same problem in distribution. And yes being unhappy with that and making a decision on it is perfectly human. Quite a few quotes of wisdom dealing with patience come to mind here.

Snide remarks aside, I think the OP was talking about a successful company culture that wins and keeps customers by giving the three things he mentioned. Remember, the first order a sales person gets is the easiest sale ever. The next orders gotten comes from how the customer perceived he or she was treated overall.

Everybody like a little ***, no body likes a smart ***.

Re: What a letdown

I'm going to give Google a pass on the supply this time. There would have been plenty of stock available except for one little thing... The Samsung Galaxy Note 7. They did not anticipate the extra demand for the Pixel due to the recall of the Note 7. There are a ton of people who ordered Pixels (me included) specifically for this reason. I didn't want one, but it was the next best thing on the market if you want to stay Android.

This is just my theory...

Re: What a letdown

I am willing to bet those orders that say "one month to delivery" will be filled and shipped sooner than that. The same happened with N6 and N6p.

Re: What a letdown

We tend to give Google some leeway because the Nexus lines were not marketed to the mainstream. Pixel is different. To take on Apple and Samsung, you have to meet the expectations of an Samsung/Apple customer. Walk in or go online at launch, and have a new phone in hand or a delivery scheduled within a few days. There are no stockouts when they launch new phones. You are trying to flip their customers but have no inventory. That is a fail.

Re: What a letdown

I agree with the OP. I didn't pre-order because the local Verizon store I have gone to for years told me for 2 weeks before launch that they would have all models and sizes in stock on launch day. Guess what? I walked into the same store yesterday morning and they said, sorry, we never got in any 128 GB XLs. The quickest way to get it is to pre-order. Now I'm on the list for shipping November 18th. Now I have plenty of time to consider and look at other devices such as the V20 or wait 4 more months for the S8.

Re: What a letdown

I'm surprised that the phones sold out to be honest. I thought it'd get little to no attention.

Yes it does suck that the next shipment is in a month, but not much we can do. Not much Google can do either.

Re: What a letdown

It only just become available yesterday. Let's see how quick they can restock. It's very possible their current estimates for when they'll have more are very conservative and people will actually get them much sooner.

Re: What a letdown

iPhones sell millions on launch day. I'm guessing these will be about 5% of what iPhones sell on day one (or less). They simply didn't make enough.

Maybe they did it on purpose to create demand or maybe more note 7 switchers are causing backups. No one except Google will ever know. I tend to think they make very few just in case they don't sell well. Then when they sell better than expected, "hey look at us, we are all sold out for a month! just like Apple!"

Re: What a letdown

And what kind of distribution model? Is Verizon ordering them and saying XXX for every store or is the store manager responsible for getting the order in, on time with the quantity they want or does Google just willy nilly ship them to Verizon stores and say "you get what you get"?

When I worked in retail (moons, eons and forever ago) we were responsible for ordering our stock and maintaining it at the street address level and when we placed our orders that's what dictated delivery time and quantity.

Re: What a letdown

It wouldn't totally surprise me if the shortage is a "marketing" ploy as look at all the free press Google is getting over it.

And a "shortage" of other hot consumer electronic devices (Iphone's and Samsung's from time-to-time) never appeared to hurt those products. In fact, one might surmise it helped build those brands.
