Last night I had a bad time trying to recover some files from my wife's epic. Before we rooted she had some importaint files in a notepad app native to stock Touchwiz. I saw a sticky in this forum about a zip you can flash to reconvert your EXT4 to rfs.. I flashed the zip as directed and it got stuck first time through. I did a battery pull and reflashed the zip, this time it completed and every this was cool. I Then proceeded to restore the backup image I made before root; The backup was corrupt and would not take my wifes epic would go to the samy screen, boot loop, and buzz. Well not aware of this problem forhand I did not have any rfs. ROM zips on my sd. So now I was stuck. I then thought I can odin back to stock, reroot to get EXT4 again, and restore my wifes current rom to correct the problem. When I hooked up the phone odin did not recognize my phone so I had to download new drivers from sammy's site and install, but because my phone did not have a rom or any opperating system on it the drivers would not install. i went back in to cwm and flashed SFR 1.1.1 even though it was a ext4 rom it still allowed me install the correct drivers i needed for my computer to recognize it. i then thought to myself maby now since my computer sees the phone i can just run the rooting program and be done because i had already flashed a ext4 rom and just needed the phone to accept it. it worked. the phone ran the root and i got my wifes phone back to the present.
I cant beleve I had worked on her phone for 3hrs. and ended up back at square 1.

Next time I'll double check about making sure important stuff is saved properly to another format before rooting. :-X

Yes sounds like a great adventure...

I'm not a big believer in switching/converting stuff from one file format to another but it can be done. The day I say goodbye to RFS format I basically said goodbye to any data, etc on RFS. You can easily transfer/convert addons, most themes, etc. from one format to the other but data and stuff can get tricky.

Hard lesson learned but it sounds like you got through it.

BTW, I do always leave a working copy of RFS format and EXT4's on my sdcard. I even still carry around the update.zip's for DK28/EB13/EC05 on my sd card also just in case..

yes it was Paul, an adventure indeed.

Thats a great idea. I think from now on i will be doing the same; saving the update zips for rfs. and a couple of rfs roms along with the ext4 updates on my SD card.
im still studying the resources you gave me a couple of weeks ago. i made a list of folders that have no changes and ones that do but im really not sure what i can change in thoses that can be changed:confused:

Sounds good friend. Yep for the small amount of space it takes to hold an extra ROM or two and some other things "just in case" on your sdcard its worth having.. This way no matter where you are you can usually get yourself out of a jam. I actually have a copy of Odin & EB13 Odin tar sitting on my device too so if it gets that bad and I'm away from home all I need is to barrow someones computer for 5-10 mins to download the stuff off my sdcard and I can Odin my device and be back in business...

Not saying everyone needs to go to this extreme but for few hundred megs it takes to have ROM or two and Odin/w tar & window drivers sitting there if your a traveler or away from home a lot its a doable option. ;)
