What about the HTC One (M8) DON'T you like?

Re: What about the M8 DON'T you like?

So we agree the One was a commercial flop?

Also, do you have any facts to support your claim that the only reason why the S4 outsold the One by huge margins is because of advertising? I will review any such evidence with an open mind. HTC had HIGH PROFILE ad campaigns featuring one of the biggest stars in the world (Robert Downey, Jr) and it didnt move the needle for the One.

IMO, HTC focused on all the wrong gimmicks with the One. Metal? most people use cases. UltraPixel? The pics lacked detail and the cameras were defective. Boomsound? Most folks use headphones. Blinkfeed? Wasn't customizable and not nearly as good as Flipboard.

Hey, I own three Ones. I enjoy the hell out of it and will prolly have a New One but I think it's an exercise in oversimplification to solely blame advertising for the lack of success for HTC.

Do you have any facts to back up your claim that most people use cases? I am actually very interested since I see a lot of samsung fans make this claim. I am not insinuating you are a fan of samsung, I am only curious how you came to the conclusion that most people use cases. Thanks for taking the time to reply.

Fair question. I am a fan of no particular brand, just smartphones in general.

Here is a very recent study on the topic. 2 out of 3 Android owners use a case. FWIW

Re: What about the M8 DON'T you like?

I may get skewered but I hate the metal they used on the first one. It seems chintzy to me. And looks "old." Don't really know how else to describe it, but I just don't like it at all.

I don't care for it either. Metal is either too cold (usual colder than surrounding air temp) or too warm (from use or holding it in your hand). Not to mention scratch and dent prone (no cases! I like to use my devices naked :)).

But I digress, putting that aside (and getting back to what the OP asked); what I'd like to tell HTC is to change/go back to a user-replaceable battery. But that ship has sailed as they abandoned it for the metal uni-body design. To bad they (and other OEM's) have decided to take that option away. :( IMHO, until battery tech drastically improves (ex. longer run times and much shorter charge times), I'll stick to having the option/ability of swapping out for a fresh battery anytime I choose (to get back to a full charge within minutes) and never having to worry about tethering to a charging source (unless I choose to). :)

Re: What about the M8 DON'T you like?

The bottom bezel is so big, iPhone 5 and Nexus 5 big. If HTC has some gestures like BB10 then the extra bezel is worth it.

I was going to say gesture area like the Palm Prē with WebOS but yes.

Going to have to say the dual camera's. Don't get me wrong we haven't seen any shots from them or reviews yet so I'm sure they'll perform well, but they sound very gimmicky to me and I don't understand why you can't just have one camera, like what do you really need dual camera's for?

I read someplace that the dual camera could give you a 3X optical zoom ( don't know if that is what HTC is doing here or not). No phone that I know of has ever had optical zoom.

Re: What about the M8 DON'T you like?

I don't like the fact that I've not seen the POGO pins on any of the leaked devices. I loved how the One Max could use that flip cover with the integrated battery and was going that would be introduced on the new One as well.

Good point; pogo pins would be a plus, same for microusb 3.0

Re: What about the M8 DON'T you like?

I had the One last year and it was pretty good, developer edition so I put GPE on it and it rocked. The one thing I wish they had added was removable battery like Samsung does, microSD is a good move though.

Re: What about the M8 DON'T you like?

Here is my opinion on one odd the reasons why the One sales weren't a hit.. the sales people at these carrier stores either direct people to check out the iPhone or the Galaxy.

Very true. Had a lady at Best buy try to get me to buy a Galaxy S4 saying it was the best phone for 2013 and that the S5 was going to be twice as good. So i pulled out my HTC One and pulled up a website showing that the One was the best phone for 2013 and some of the features on the phone. She still insisted that the S4 was way better and that she would never own or try to sell an HTC One. I figured she must own an S4 since she pushed it so hard, but no she had a $200 cheap walmart phone.

I am not bashing the S4 or S5, I know they are good phones just liked the HTC One better.

That's sad. The S4 was one of the best devices of Q2... Probably 3rd or 4th, but by winter there were at least 4-6 devices that passed it as well. IMO it was probably a top 10 device on average placement, but on December 31st, I wouldn't have included it in a top 10 list unless "large phones" and other OS's were excluded. Very few reviews placed it definitively ahead of the One last Spring.

I have been curious to know what duo camera is for as well. According to
Dual-lens smartphone cameras are coming, and this is why we want one

You can potentially get:
1. sharper image + more accurate data for details
"Computational photography algorithms will use combined imaging data from the two sensors to create superior photos and give additional photographic options."
http://www.phonearena.com/news/The-...ography-magic-and-optical-zoom-in-tow_id53136
2. up to 3x optical zoom (maybe this is only for corephotonic's model of dual camera)
3. depth information ... allowing you to change focus after the picture is taken (which gives the professional photography result)
4. 3D informtion ... this is pretty gimmicky to me, but would be fun to play with i suppose

A possible explanation for this is that the One has a higher return rate and sales people are aware of this and direct people towards more reliable devices. There were articles awhile back on this topic. From my own experience, two of my three ones have defective camera modules which correlates with the many camera complaint threads.

Re: What about the M8 DON'T you like?

If the power button ends up on top, me no likey especially on a phone that's got some height to it. Just a tad trickier for one-handed use. More leaks please!

you can double tap screen to wake it with m8

Re: What about the M8 DON'T you like?

For my own personal thinking and use it's the lack of at minimum a 3000 mAh battery.

Re: What about the M8 DON'T you like?

There have been several leaks lately including a video of the device walking through the hardware and software included with it. Considering what we've already seen, what don't you like about the M8 that you wish could be changed?

Let's take it a step further and assume that HTC called you directly and said, "What's the 1 thing you want us to change or include in the M8?" I know it's hard to come up with that One thing since there may be many. But considering that, what would you say?

It doesn't sound like the camera is the best but I know that the software behind any camera is wag determines it's quality in addition to hardware so I'm hoping that it proves me wrong. 😁

Do you just want an arbitrary number to be met or is it better to have great battery life?

Cant believe you said that. Because theres obviously a correlation between the battery size and how long it lasts.

Why does the g2 and note 3 and htc one max AND oppo n1 have a phenomenal battery? Hint: 3000mah and above.

No matter how much htc is good at optimising their software nothing beats having a bigger battery.

Plus seriously people, the most annoying thing about the m8 is the bezel?THE BEZEL? LOL

How shallow could you be, they built a phone thats beautifully constructed and you're concerned about the bezel.

There is a correlation - somewhat, but there are also obvious devices that don't follow the trend. A great example is the Galaxy S4 (2600 mAh) vs the Moto X (2200 mAh), where the Moto X will regularly get 35-50% more time out of a single charge, given similar usage despite having the S4 having an 18% larger battery. We see the same thing in several other Android devices, but also in Chromebooks and other computers, as well as just about everything else that run on a combination of software and batteries. If everything else were equal, increasing capacity would increase battery life, that's true. But everything else is not equal, and more of the options we want in software and form factor are available if we use smarter technology rather than just more of it, especially in the case of batteries.

My question is more framed at wondering if we should just instead require a satisfactory battery level, rather than a silly number that may or may not meet the expectations of "good battery life". For example, if I have a 2600 mAh battery and it lasts only 12-16 hours before needing a charger, that's garbage. However, if my device lasts a very full day without me ever having to think about it's charger (or maybe two very full days), then I don't care what the number is that permits that usage. The 2200 mAh battery in the X does that, the much larger 3500mAh battery in the Droid Maxx does too.

Important: Battery life
Not Important: Battery Capacity
Connection: Almost entirely related to what is being powered and how it runs, rather than just the capacity.
