First i plan to ROOT it, i am very scared to do i tthough because i hear the risks are like HIGH, but i found the guide to root it and everyone seems to be getting through it ok.

but i dont have a computer i can use atm (im on library atm) but the next opportunity i do i will try to root it!!

I dont plan to install any ROMS because it just seems way too risky and complicated for me.

I am using a GO EX launcher with Cynogenmod Theme, looks cool!

and i got startup manager and got rid of all teh crap i dont want, and i use advanced task killer to kill tasks.

to improve battery, i hear people tell me to delete battery.sts file in the phone, and set default governor to on demand.

Anything else i need to get/do? I want to get the most i can out of the OS.

:)

Oh btw, i tried to root my phone with teh app z4root or something, and i chose to do a "temporary root" and teh screen just went white and phone i restarted.

I know now that doesnt work, but just wondering is my phone ok? Everything seems to be working as it should...but i hope some random file didnt get messed up...

Rooting your phone is installing a program called "su". This program allows you to run operations as the "root" user. So it's a very low risk operation; simply installing this program is not going to affect the operation of the phone until you actually USE the su program to do things to your phone as root. That's where all the benefit (and risk) begins.

To install "su", you need to be able to write on the phone's main operating system, or ROM. There is only one program I know that does that, and it's called "zergrush". This program is usually wrapped up in other utilities which run zergrush, install "su", you can perhaps add other programs that are convenient. Again, all of that is very low risk for damage to your phone.

Where people run into trouble typically is writing over whole sections of the phone at once. Installing a new ROM is basically that - it's writing over your entire phone's operating system. If you don't have a backup, and your new ROM has no ability to help you write your old ROM back, or you don't have a functioning Custom Recovery, you can brick your phone.

As far as getting the most out of your phone - that's really up to you to decide how much you want to risk it. Since you don't have a computer, some utilities are not available to you to help you if things go wrong, so I would not suggest doing anything beyond rooting your phone, calibrating your battery, and perhaps running a program that will change the default governer like NoFrills or SetCPU. Those are all low-risk operations that are easily reversible.

The phone itself performs quite well out of the box; the only beneficial thing I've added was changing the default governer to up my battery life from 16 hours to about 40 hours. I also replaced the startup and shutdown sounds with silent files, since I find those Virgin Mobile sound annoying, but that wasn't required at all.
