I doubt that he has a s3 because you have to press the power and home button simultaneously or swipe using motion in order to take a screenshot. Also there are so many battery threads to help you already

No, rooting is gaining root access on your device, which pretty much allows you to fully access your device, including swapping out ROMs/OSes and kernels.

Here's a link to the S3 forums. Find your carrier's S3 and click on the rooting/hacks section. There should be a rooting guide, and it should explain what you'll have to do to root it. If you don't do anything wrong, it should be safe. The only thing you should know is that before rooting, you have to unlock your bootloader, which will wipe your data. So you should back up your phone first.
